Opening — Na explains the resignation¶
Chey Kang-suk demands an explanation for Na’s resignation letter.
Na explains that one of the country’s major youth criminal circles uses the name G.Y, meaning their former student Choi Ga-yoon.
The head of the circle is identified as:
JO GYU-CHEOL (20)
National criminal-circle leader; currently imprisoned.
Na says he became blinded by rage when he understood the tattoo and organization.
Ga-yoon had tried her best for Gyu-cheol’s sake. He killed her, showed no remorse, and then dirtied her name by building G.Y around it.
Na considered killing everyone involved regardless of the consequences.
The agency is Ga-yoon’s unfinished work¶
Na says he eventually realized that the purpose of the Teachers’ Rights Protection Agency is to ensure Ga-yoon’s efforts were not meaningless.
He can continue working for now.
The danger will return when Jo Gyu-cheol is released or when Na crosses paths with the remaining G.Y leadership.
Jang Kwon-hyuk barely helped him maintain reason during the present incident.
Na is not certain he can restrain himself next time.
He asks Chey to accept the resignation before he commits something that cannot be reversed and to prioritize keeping the agency alive.
Chey refuses to abandon him¶
Chey says there is no point in the agency without Na.
If the feared day comes, Na can go to prison.
Chey will take care of the agency and finish the remaining criminals himself.
The answer is both absurdly confident and deeply loyal.
Chey tells Na that they still have an enormous amount of work.
Na withdraws the idea of giving up so easily.
He will continue at least until Jo Gyu-cheol’s release forces the question again.
Transition — A closed religious community¶
The story shifts to a congregation chanting praises.
Followers speak of a lord who will descend and destroy the spirits of the world.
A woman, Park So-hyun, is subjected to painful “repentance” before a pastor.
The pastor tells her she should feel honored because pain brings her closer to the lord.
So-hyun says she is not corrupted by sin and is not trying to defile the religion.
She wants one thing:
“A PROPER SCHOOL FOR SEO YOOL TO GO TO.”
She wants her child to attend a school with real teachers and children of the same age.
The pastor rejects ordinary education¶
The pastor says Seo-yool already receives the only education she requires: the lord’s teachings.
So-hyun insists that she means ordinary education—running, learning, and interacting with other children.
She asks Seo-yool whether she still wants to go to a proper school.
The child repeats the doctrine taught by the adults.
The outside world is filled with the devil’s influence, and any desire to leave is a whisper from the devil.
Seo-yool asks whether her mother has been corrupted.
She tells the pastor that the mother may be under the devil’s influence and recalls the doctrine that one corrupted family member can corrupt everyone.
Forced repentance¶
The pastor tells the child there is no need for her to repent because Park So-hyun’s sins can be washed away through him.
He asks So-hyun to confirm this.
She submits.
“YES, PASTOR.”
She welcomes the lord and saints into her heart, forsakes sin, and begs forgiveness.
The chapter ends on her coerced obedience and introduces an isolated religious group using doctrine to deny children formal education and control families.
Chapter-level observations¶
1. Na fears personal vengeance more than institutional criticism¶
His resignation is intended to protect the agency from the day he may choose murder over education.
2. Chey offers solidarity rather than moral perfection¶
He does not promise Na will never fail. He promises the work will continue and Na will not face that possibility alone.
3. The new case begins with compulsory education¶
Park So-hyun’s request is not theological debate. She wants her child to receive ordinary schooling.
4. The child has been trained to police the parent¶
Seo-yool repeats the doctrine against her own mother, allowing the pastor to turn family attachment into surveillance.
