Recurring characters in this chapter:
- Im Han-rim: Red-haired field inspector wearing dark sunglasses and a white cropped GUESS shirt during the opening; she later appears in her black agency suit.
- Yoon So-yeon (25): Han-rim’s black-haired, bespectacled friend.
- Ju-hee: A young woman trapped inside a pseudo-religious group and compelled to preach in public.

Han-rim presses the school question¶
On a busy commercial street, Han-rim stands in front of a nervous young woman with shoulder-length dark-purple hair. Han-rim’s red hair is tied back, she wears sunglasses, a white cropped GUESS top, blue jeans, and sneakers, and she holds one hand on her hip. The younger woman wears a black shirt with a cherry graphic and clutches religious pamphlets.
Han-rim:
I’LL ASK AGAIN.
WHAT ABOUT SCHOOL…?
Han-rim bends over the pamphlet and points out what concerns her.
ACCORDING TO THIS PAMPHLET, IT DOESN’T LOOK LIKE YOU GO TO SCHOOL.
The young woman’s eyes widen. One of the printed pamphlets shows the severe face of a male preacher amid large Korean slogans.
Ju-hee’s internal thought:
THE PASTOR’S EYES…
Her panic is shown through an intrusive mental image: a male believer kneels with his hands bound above him in a dark room, while a grinning suited man looms in the foreground. The image suggests punishment and surveillance inside the group.
Ju-hee thinks:
ARE GONE.
NOW’S MY CHANCE!
NOW’S THE CHANCE FOR ME TO SPILL EVERYTHING…
Her lips part as though she is about to confess. Sweat runs down her cheek.
Then fear of retaliation stops her. The memory shifts toward her younger brother and the cult leader’s smiling face.
N-NO…! IF I DO THAT NOW…
BROTHER WILL…!
Ju-hee lowers her head and remains silent.
Images 6–8 — So-yeon arrives after Han-rim’s latest altercation¶
A wider panel reveals Saint Hak-bong unconscious on the pavement between the women, surrounded by scattered pamphlets. Han-rim stands over him while Ju-hee remains nearby.
Han-rim:
SPIT IT OUT ALREADY~
DO YOU EVEN GO TO SCHOOL?
A new voice calls from behind her:
YO~ HAN LIM UNNI~
Han-rim turns.
AH… SO YEON…
Yoon So-yeon approaches in a black sleeveless crop top, beige shorts, round glasses, and a shoulder bag. A label identifies her:
YOON SO YEON (25)
(IM HAN LIM’S FRIEND)
She looks from Han-rim to the unconscious man.
So-yeon:
LOOKS LIKE YOU CAME EARLIER THAN ME, HUH?
BUT WHAT ARE YOU DOIN—
She fully notices Hak-bong on the ground and erupts.
DID YOU HIT SOMEONE AGAIN?! HOW DOES THIS KEEP ON HAPPENING?!
Han-rim raises both hands defensively.
N-NO IT’S JUST THAT…
So-yeon grabs Han-rim and drags her away.
WHATEVER! LET’S BOUNCE!
Han-rim looks back at Ju-hee and shouts advice over her shoulder:
HEY! IF YOU NEED HELP!
CONTACT THE TEACHER’S RIGHT AGENCY!
So-yeon pulls harder.
WHY ARE YOU TELLING HER THAT?! HURRY UP!
Ju-hee is left alone on the street, staring after them.
TEACHER’S RIGHT… AGENCY?
The phrase lodges in her mind as a possible route out.
The scene transitions past a storefront marked “SWIMSUITS.”
Images 9–13 — Swimsuit shopping and Han-rim’s unease¶
Inside the store, So-yeon cheerfully holds up or models swimwear while Han-rim’s attention remains elsewhere.
So-yeon:
OH~ THIS LOOKS NICE.
Han-rim is distracted by the pamphlet and the frightened girl.
Han-rim’s internal narration:
I CAN’T STOP THINKING ABOUT IT…
She recalls the pamphlet’s teachings:
SCHOOLS ARE THE DEVIL’S NEST…
She reasons through what she saw:
IF THIS IS TRUE, THEN IT MEANS THIS KID DOESN’T GO TO SCHOOL, OR GO OUT PROPERLY…
PSEUDO RELIGIOUS CULT IS LOCKING AWAY KIDS INSTEAD AND NOT SENDING THEM TO SCHOOL…
THEN ISN’T THIS REALLY BAD?
So-yeon’s voice interrupts. A translator note jokes about owning the same shirt as one of the designs.
Han-rim tries on clothing that does not fit properly. So-yeon laughs:
WOW~ EVEN THIS DOESN’T FIT? THAT’S AMAZING!
She notices Han-rim’s expression.
WHAT’S WITH YOUR MOOD TODAY?
TO THINK YOU WERE SO EXCITED ABOUT GOING TO THE SEA JUST YESTERDAY…
IS IT BECAUSE OF THAT?
Han-rim asks:
WHAT’S THAT ABOUT?
Then she talks herself down.
YEAH… I PROBABLY OVERREACTED…
SHE MIGHT JUST BE A PART TIMER RATHER THAN A BELIEVER…
OR MAYBE HER MOM OR A RELATIVE ORDERED HER TO DO IT…
Han-rim remembers the advice she shouted:
SHE’LL CONTACT THE TEACHER’S RIGHT AGENCY IF SHE GETS INTO TROUBLE.
She decides not to ruin a rare day off.
AND THIS IS A RARE BREAK…
A travel advertisement promises summer fun, reinforcing the beach plan.
SO I’LL HAVE A BLAST AT SEA TOMORROW!
Han-rim forces herself back into the shopping trip, but the abrupt confidence reads as self-persuasion rather than genuine relief.
Images 14–16 — Ju-hee dines with the cult leader¶
The scene shifts to an elegant, sterile dining room inside the group’s sanctuary. Ju-hee sits alone at one end of a long white table. The older cult leader sits far opposite her in a black robe-like suit, wine glass in hand. The physical distance makes the meal resemble an interrogation.
He presents a luxurious dish.
Cult leader:
HOW IS IT? THIS IS CALLED FOIE GRAS.
DEVILS CANNOT EAT THIS FOOD EASILY.
Ju-hee puts a bite into her mouth. Her inner thoughts contradict her outward obedience.
I ALWAYS FELT THIS WAY…
IT’S NOT WHAT YOU EAT THAT’S IMPORTANT…
A close-up of the plated food is followed by:
BUT WHO YOU EAT IT WITH.
Ju-hee answers politely:
IT’S… VERY DELICIOUS…
Her internal verdict follows immediately:
IT TASTES TERRIBLE!
The leader asks about the street incident.
I HEARD THAT THERE WAS SOME TROUBLE TODAY?
Ju-hee freezes.
DID YOU SAY ANYTHING WHEN SAINT HAK BONG WAS UNCONSCIOUS?
Ju-hee lowers her fork and chooses her words carefully.
DON’T WORRY.
The leader smiles over his wineglass.
I SAID NOTHING.
He immediately seizes on the phrasing.
THAT’S QUITE A STRANGE WAY TO SAY IT.
‘DON’T WORRY, I SAID NOTHING’…
His eye appears enlarged and distorted behind his glasses.
ISN’T THAT SOMETHING USUALLY SAID WHEN COVERING UP SOMETHING BAD?
He asks in a black-rimmed balloon:
DID WE DO SOMETHING BAD TO YOU?
Ju-hee’s pupils shrink. Sweat gathers across her face.
N-NO. I WORDED IT POORLY…
A servant removes dishes while the leader continues studying her.
Images 17–22 — Ju-hyeok is used as leverage¶
The cult leader stands and walks away from the table with his hands clasped behind him. Ju-hee remains rigid in her chair.
He reminds her that leaving the compound is a privilege he controls.
SAINT JU HEE… YOU HAVE BEEN BEGGING US TO LET YOU GO OUT AND PREACH, HAVE YOU NOT?
He smiles broadly.
IT SEEMS THAT THIS PREACHING…
Ju-hee’s eyes widen.
IS THE ONLY TIME YOU CAN LEAVE THIS SANCTUARY.
He points her toward an enormous bowl or tray of dry, brown food.
IF YOU STILL HAVE FAITH WITHIN YOU.
EAT IT ALL.
Ju-hee sweats and hesitates. The leader lightly taps or clicks his utensil.
OH, CAN’T DO IT? THEN…
He turns toward a thin boy standing at the doorway.
SHOULD I ASK SAINT JU HYEOK TO DO IT INSTEAD?
Ju-hyeok has closely cropped hair, dark circles under his eyes, a loose green T-shirt, and blue shorts. He looks exhausted and underfed.
Ju-hee rushes toward him as he reaches for the food.
JU HYEOK!
The boy begins shoveling handfuls into his mouth. Food spills across the table and floor.
AH…
Ju-hee grabs at him.
JU HYEOK! WHAT ARE YOU DOING?! DON’T EAT THAT!
The leader calmly explains the cruelty as voluntary devotion.
SAINT JU HYEOK HAS BEEN FASTING FOR THE PAST 3 DAYS IN ORDER TO REPENT.
I TOLD HIM THAT HIS SISTER SEEMED TO BE LACKING FAITH, SO HE TOOK IT UPON HIMSELF TO REPENT.
Ju-hee explodes:
WHAT DO YOU MEAN I LACK FAITH?! WHAT DID I DO?!
The leader walks toward her.
SAINT JU HEE… IT HAS BEEN 14 YEARS SINCE I’VE STARTED WORKING AS A PREACHER…
He clamps both hands around her face and squeezes her cheeks.
THROUGH THOSE 14 YEARS, I ACQUIRED QUITE AN INTERESTING SKILL!
He leans close, eyes manic behind the glasses.
WITH EYES ALONE,
I CAN SEE IF SOMEONE LACKS FAITH OR NOT!
Ju-hee is visibly terrified.
SAINT JU HEE… DON’T THINK ABOUT ANYTHING ELSE.
JUST… BELIEVE!
A tear gathers in her eye.
LIKE YOUR MOTHER, FATHER, AND LITTLE BROTHER…
THAT IS THE SOLE PATH TO ENLIGHTENMENT.
The leader’s manipulation is explicit: family loyalty is turned into a weapon against independent thought.
Images 23–24 — Why people remain inside pseudo-religious groups¶
The leader walks away while Ju-hee stands beside Ju-hyeok, who is still bent over the food.
Narration states:
NOT ALL PSEUDO RELIGION MEMBERS ARE TRUE BELIEVERS.
A sequence shows members living and working inside the compound, their expressions passive and resigned.
MANY OF THEM ARE AWARE OF HOW WRONG EVERYTHING IS.
AND KNOW THAT THEY MUST PULL OUT OF IT ALL.
BUT BECAUSE OF THEIR FAMILY THAT ARE STILL ENTANGLED,
THEY STOP RESISTING AND GO WITH THE FLOW.
THIS IS THE MAIN REASON WHY MANY PSEUDO RELIGIONS STILL EXIST.
The explanatory narration directly frames Ju-hee’s situation: her family is not a source of support but the chain keeping her inside.
Images 24–26 — The cult sermon and Ju-hee’s private prayer¶
The congregation gathers before a stage or broadcast screen. The cult leader speaks about a newly emerging disease.
REGARDING THE NEW DISEASE
HEALTH ORGANISATION HAS RELEASED GUIDELINES FOR PEOPLE TO RECEIVE VACCINATIONS ON A GLOBAL BASIS!
He raises his voice to turn public-health guidance into a conspiracy.
HOWEVER WE MUST NOT BE FOOLED!
THIS IS ALL BEING DONE UNDER THE ORDER OF THE DEVIL TO INSTALL MICROCHIPS WITHIN US TO MAKE US SUBSERVIENT…!
Believers react with fear and fervor. Ju-hee sits among them, hands clasped, but her internal prayer is directed anywhere except toward the man controlling them.
LORD, THIS IS NOT A PRAYER TO YOU…
BUDDHA, GOD.
EVEN THE DEVIL…
She imagines or stares toward the preacher’s silhouette.
IF YOU CAN KILL THIS ROTTEN BASTARD…
YOU ARE THE ONE TRUE GOD.
Her desperation has progressed from doubt to a wish for the leader’s death.
Image 27 — Han-rim changes course¶
The final image returns to Han-rim, now dressed in her black field-inspector suit with a light blue-gray shirt and tie. Her red hair blows behind her as she leans forward with a furious, decisive expression.
DAMN IT…
I JUST CAN’T IGNORE THIS!
The beach trip and rare vacation are abandoned. The chapter closes with Han-rim choosing to investigate the pseudo-religious group despite having only intuition and the frightened girl’s behavior to guide her.
End of Chapter 103¶
Chapter continuity summary¶
Chapter 103 begins a new arc centered on children and young adults isolated inside a pseudo-religious compound. Han-rim notices that Ju-hee’s pamphlet condemns schools and realizes that the group may be withholding education and normal outside contact. Although Ju-hee nearly confesses, fear for her brother silences her.
The chapter then shows why escape is difficult. Ju-hee is allowed outside only to preach; her younger brother is starved and used as leverage; the leader interprets any hesitation as insufficient faith; and family devotion is deliberately converted into obedience. The closing decision by Han-rim establishes the Teachers’ Rights Agency as a potential outside force against a system that has prevented its younger members from attending school at all.
