Han-rim arrives in her field-inspector uniform: black suit, pale shirt, tie, and long red hair loose around her shoulders.
DAMN IT…
I JUST CAN’T IGNORE THIS!
NOT WITHOUT CONFIRMING…
She opens the doors to a large sanctuary and finds rows of adults and children seated before a stage decorated with a star-like religious emblem.
WHAT IS THIS…?
SERMON ON A WEEKDAY MORNING?
The scheduling immediately supports her concern that the children are not attending ordinary school.
Saint Hak-bong, the man she struck in the previous chapter, sees her and points wildly.
THAT’S THE ONE WHO ASSAULTED ME!
A DEVIL WORSHIPPER!
The congregation turns hostile. Adults rise from the pews and shout:
HOW DARE SUCH FILTHY SCUM DESECRATE THIS HOLY PLACE?
ARE YOU HERE TO CORRUPT US?!
KILL THE DEVIL WORSHIPPER!
DRAG HER IN!
SHE NEEDS TO BE EXECUTED!
Han-rim stands in the doorway with both fists clenched. She thinks that the crowd is too large for her to handle casually and that she may have to return with preparation.
Before the mob reaches her, the cult leader raises a hand.
EVERYBODY CALM DOWN.
He adopts a benevolent expression and addresses the congregation:
REGARDLESS OF WHO SHE IS, ALL LIVING AND BREATHING BEINGS ARE THE LORD’S CHILDREN.
SHE HAS EVERY RIGHT TO LISTEN TO THE LORD’S WORDS.
The same man who terrified Ju-hee now presents himself publicly as compassionate and reasonable.
Han-rim is escorted into a private meeting area. The leader studies her with interest.
THIS PERSON…?
Images 8–11 — Han-rim identifies herself and asks about the children¶
Han-rim presents a government identification card marked AGENT BADGE and bearing her portrait.
The leader reads:
TEACHER’S RIGHT AGENCY…?
He asks:
WHAT BUSINESS DO YOU HAVE HERE?
Han-rim explains:
WE ARE A DEPARTMENT THAT WORKS DIRECTLY UNDER THE MINISTER OF EDUCATION…
AND WE CRACK DOWN ON STUDENTS AND TEACHERS WHO BREAK THE RULES…
THEN MAKE SURE THAT IT DOESN’T REPEAT.
The leader replies politely:
YOU DO VERY IMPORTANT WORK, BUT WHY OUR CHURCH…?
Ju-hee appears in the background carrying refreshments. She recognizes Han-rim and stiffens, but does not openly acknowledge her.
Han-rim references the street incident and the group’s literature:
I DON’T KNOW IF YOU’VE HEARD ABOUT IT, BUT THERE WAS A SMALL SCUFFLE THE OTHER DAY.
SCHOOLS ARE THE DEVIL’S NEST, AND THE SYSTEM IS INHERENTLY EVIL.
THIS MAY JUST BE BUSINESS FOR YOU.
BUT I CANNOT LET THIS GO BY.
She recalls seeing numerous children inside the church.
I SAW LOTS OF KIDS EARLIER…
COULD IT BE THAT THEY AREN’T ATTENDING SCHOOL?
The leader initially frames the question as an accusation:
YOU BARGE IN HERE AND ACCUSE US OF SUCH CRIMES…
Then he answers without denying the central fact.
THAT’S RIGHT. WE DON’T TRUST THE EDUCATION SYSTEM, SO WE DON’T SEND THEM TO SCHOOL.
HOWEVER, THEY DO REQUIRE EDUCATION…
SO WE SEND THEM TO AN ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL THAT WE RUN.
Han-rim repeats:
ALTERNATIVE SCHOOL…?
The cult leader offers to show it to her rather than merely describe it.
Images 12–13 — Journey to the alternative school¶
Han-rim rides in a vehicle with members of the group, leaving the dense city behind for a rural area.
She asks:
THE SCHOOL IS QUITE FAR, ISN’T IT?
The driver or leader replies:
IT’S NOT THAT FAR. AROUND 30 MINUTES AWAY…?
SUCH AN URBAN AREA WOULDN’T BE GOOD FOR THE CHILDREN, YES?
The school is revealed beyond a green field and wooded hills. It consists of low buildings and open outdoor space rather than a conventional urban campus.
Han-rim looks around in disbelief.
THIS IS… A SCHOOL?
Children run freely through grass, climb, play, and gather in informal groups. There are no visible uniforms, bells, lines, or classroom blocks.

The cult leader explains the operating philosophy:
UNLIKE NORMAL SCHOOLS, OUR SCHOOL HAS NOTHING LIKE ‘CLASS TIME’.
Children lounge in the shade, draw, play games, and move between activities at their own pace.
RESTING WHEN THEY WANT… AND PLAYING AS MUCH AS THEY WANT…
IF THEY WANT TO STUDY, THEY CAN ALWAYS GO TO THE TEACHER…
AND LEARN AS MUCH AS THEY WANT.
PLAYING AS MUCH AS YOU WANT, AND STUDYING AS MUCH AS YOU WANT.
THIS IS THE EDUCATION SYSTEM THAT WE UTILISE.
Han-rim watches children cluster around adults in an apparently relaxed environment. She asks a practical question:
IS… IT REALLY POSSIBLE TO PROPERLY TEACH LIKE THIS?
WOULDN’T IT BE DIFFICULT TO KEEP TO A SYLLABUS?
The leader repeats the word with disdain:
A SYLLABUS YOU SAY…
Images 16–19 — The leader’s critique of conventional schooling¶
The leader asks:
DO YOU KNOW WHY WE CALL SCHOOLS THE DEVIL’S WORK?
The art shifts to images of exhausted children at desks, competitive testing, and students being pushed through identical standards.
LOOK AT KIDS NOW. THEY ARE FORCED TO FOLLOW A HELLISH SYLLABUS THAT IGNORE THE CHILDREN’S SUITABILITY FOR IT.
AND THE AMOUNT OF THINGS THEY ARE TAUGHT, MAKES THEM EXTREMELY STRESSED.
AFTER LEARNING THE BASICS, THEY ARE FORCED TO COMPETE.
THEY ARE FORCED TO LIVE IN AN ENVIRONMENT WHERE THEY MUST CONSTANTLY ADVANCE ONE STEP FURTHER, EVEN IF IT MEANS PUSHING OTHERS OUT OF THE WAY.
THEN THE CHILDREN WHO WERE RAISED IN SUCH A WAY, PASS THAT DOWN TO THEIR CHILDREN.
AND HENCE, IT BECOMES AN UNENDING CYCLE OF COMPETITION.
The imagery becomes darker, showing isolation and despair.
IF YOU CANNOT HANDLE THE COMPETITION, THE ONLY ROAD OUT IS DEATH…
THAT IS WHY WE ARE UNABLE TO TRUST THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
IF THIS IS NOT THE DEVIL’S WORK, THEN WHAT IS?
He then points back to the alternative-school children.
BUT WHEN YOU SEE OUR KIDS.
DON’T YOU SEE THE PEACE IN THEIR FACES?
DON’T YOU FEEL THE PURITY OF THEIR SOULS
THAT YOU CANNOT FIND IN CHILDREN OF THE OUTSIDE WORLD?
A little girl runs up calling:
PASTOR~
The visual contrast is deliberate. His argument contains genuine criticism of academic pressure, and the children appear outwardly cheerful, making the hidden abuse harder to prove.
Images 20–22 — Han-rim tentatively accepts the surface explanation¶
The little girl proudly presents a bouquet:
I MADE A FLOWER BUNDLE~
The leader continues positioning the church as misunderstood rather than dangerous.
FOR A PSEUDO RELIGION CULT WE ARE MISTAKEN DUE TO OUR DISDAIN FOR THE SCHOOL SYSTEM.
HOWEVER, THE PARENTS OF THE CHILDREN HERE HAVE ALL EXPERIENCED HELL ON EARTH.
DON’T YOU THINK THEY ALL NEED A PLACE TO REST AND LET THEIR MINDS BE FREE?
Han-rim privately evaluates the situation:
ALTERNATIVE SCHOOLING… A SCHOOL WHERE THEY OPPOSE THE PUBLIC EDUCATION SYSTEM IN FAVOUR OF THEIR OWN.
THEY MAY BE EDUCATING CHILDREN WITHOUT FORCING THEM TO GO THROUGH GENERAL EDUCATION…
THERE ARE MANY THINGS THAT CAN GO WRONG IN A SCHOOL THAT DOESN’T HAVE THE MINISTRY OF EDUCATION’S APPROVAL.
She looks around again at children playing peacefully.
ALTHOUGH IT’S A BIT MUCH TO CALL SCHOOLS THE DEVIL’S NEST.
IT’S NOT LIKE THEY’RE BRAINWASHING THEM, SO…
IT SEEMS LIKE THERE ARE NO ISSUES.
The conclusion is cautious, not enthusiastic. Han-rim has not found visible evidence strong enough to justify intervention.
She thanks the leader:
THANK YOU FOR YOUR UNDERSTANDING.
THEN, I SHALL TAKE MY LEAVE. THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME.
He replies with continued hospitality:
PLEASE TAKE THE CAR, THE SAINT SHALL DRIVE YOU BACK.
Ju-hee and other believers watch from a distance, unable to speak freely.
Images 23–26 — A child’s strange farewell¶
Before Han-rim leaves, the little girl from the field approaches with flowers. Han-rim crouches so they are eye-to-eye and accepts one.
Han-rim:
THANKS.
Child:
COME BACK SOON.
Then the child addresses her in a dark, emphasized balloon:
MISTER POLICE.
Han-rim blinks.
MISTER POLICE?
She laughs and gestures toward her suit.
I GET WHY YOU’D THINK I’M POLICE FROM MY OUTFIT…
BUT I’M A GIRL… SO WHY THE ‘MISTER’?
The child’s cheerful expression vanishes instantly. Her pupils shrink, sweat pours down her face, and the background turns black.
OH… UH…
T-THATS…
The cult leader appears directly behind the child, face distorted by shadow and his glasses reflecting pale light. Han-rim looks sideways toward him while the girl bows her head over the flowers.
UHMM……
The chapter ends without explaining the phrase. The child’s terror indicates that she has either said something forbidden or revealed a gap in the education the adults wanted Han-rim to see.
End of Chapter 104¶
Chapter continuity summary¶
Chapter 104 shows how the cult survives outside scrutiny. When Han-rim arrives, the congregation behaves violently, but the leader immediately replaces that image with calm hospitality, a plausible educational philosophy, and happy-looking children. His critique of rigid curricula and academic competition is convincing enough to obscure the coercion shown inside the sanctuary.
The final exchange breaks the performance. The girl’s panic after calling Han-rim “Mister Police” suggests that the children’s language, gender understanding, or knowledge of outside institutions has been manipulated. The leader’s silent appearance confirms that what seemed like harmless alternative schooling contains rules the children are terrified to violate.
