Ju-hee exposes the cult’s real refuge¶
The chapter opens with believers attacking or restraining the pastor while insisting they must drive the devil from him.
JUST WHAT ARE YOU DOING! I AM THE SON OF THE LORD!
THE LEADER WHO WILL BRING YOU INNER PEACE!
WE MUST CHASE AWAY THE DEVIL WITHIN THE PASTOR…
Han-rim asks Hwa-jin what he means by calling the cult a “refuge.” He postpones the explanation because the crowd is becoming violent.
Ju-hee steps forward and addresses the congregation herself.
STOP ACTING LIKE DEVOUT BELIEVERS
WHEN YOU DON’T EVEN BELIEVE IN THE RELIGION.
She says they all know the devil, paradise, and the pastor’s supernatural claims are lies. She singles out Seo Yool’s mother, who frequently complained that the community was wrong and wanted to leave.
ALTHOUGH A SMALL PART OF YOU KNOWS THAT ALL THIS IS WRONG, THE REASON YOU ALL STAY HERE REGARDLESS
HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH THE RELIGION.
YOU JUST DON’T WANT TO LEAVE, RIGHT?
She identifies the believers as people wounded by ordinary life: low self-esteem, failing work, troubled marriages, and families they cannot manage. The pastor gives them the fantasy of being chosen and assigns a goal that feels meaningful even when false.

Ju-hee confronts her parents¶
Ju-hee turns directly toward her mother and father.
ESPECIALLY YOU, MOM, DAD.
YOU’RE PATHETIC.
Their restaurant was continually close to bankruptcy, and they constantly dreamed of throwing everything away and escaping. When the cult offered that opportunity, they accepted it.
BUT ONCE YOU FOUND A CHANCE TO ESCAPE, YOU TOOK IT LIKE A COWARD!
Her father, still clinging to the doctrine, asks whether the devil has left her body. Ju-hee strikes him. Her mother reacts in outrage:
H-HOW DARE YOU HIT YOUR FATHER, YOU BITCH!
Ju-hee refuses to accept that the parents’ desire for freedom gave them the right to destroy their children’s lives.
MOM AND DAD BEING IN A CULT… YEAH, THAT’S YOUR WAY OF BEING FREE.
BUT NOT FOR US.
SOCIETY’S DREGS SHOULD JUST STICK TOGETHER.
JUST DON’T RUIN OUR LIVES TOO!
Ju-hyeok asks whether the pastor was telling the truth and whether the devil has been defeated. Ju-hee answers gently and directly:
THERE WASN’T ONE, TO BEGIN WITH.
JUST A SINGLE CON MAN.
The cult arc ends not with an official’s speech, but with a child naming the lie to another child.
Aftermath and trial¶
Narration notes that Han-rim’s resignation letter is rejected by the agency head despite Hwa-jin’s theatrical acceptance.
ALTHOUGH AN OBVIOUS ONE, IM HAN LIM’S RESIGNATION LETTER WAS REJECTED BY THE HEAD OF THE AGENCY.
Several months later, the cult leader—identified as Pastor Kim—faces criminal trial. Having accumulated large sums from believers, he hires a top-tier legal team normally used by major corporations.
Hwa-jin and Han-rim testify about what they witnessed and counter the defense lawyers point by point. Because the Teachers’ Rights Agency is involved, the incident receives intense national attention. News reports argue that severe punishment is inevitable.
Outside the courthouse, cult loyalists protest with signs and slogans:
RELEASE THE PASTOR IMMEDIATELY!
HE IS THE SON OF THE LORD!
THE PASTOR IS THIS WORLD’S MESSIAH!
THE TEACHERS’ RIGHTS AGENCY SHALL BURN IN HELLFIRE!
Han-rim looks depressed that adults still defend him. Hwa-jin says their choices cannot be controlled indefinitely.
IT CAN’T BE HELPED… SINCE IT’S THE CHOICE THEY MADE.
WE’VE DONE ENOUGH GOOD BY ISOLATING THE CHILDREN.
WE ALSO NEED TO MAKE SURE THEY DON’T TRY AND TAKE THEM BACK.
Ju-hee’s message¶
Han-rim complains that the ending feels bleak after sacrificing her day off. She then receives a message and photograph from Ju-hee.
The message says the children are doing well and attending school, thanks the agents, and states that asking for help was the best decision of Ju-hee’s life. She promises to visit the education bureau with the other children.
Han-rim’s mood changes instantly.
I SUDDENLY FEEL A WHOLE LOT BETTER.
Hwa-jin teases her:
HEH~ THAT WAS A PRETTY QUICK SHIFT FROM FEELING DEPRESSED~
The emotional payoff emphasizes that the mission’s success is measured through the children’s ordinary school life rather than whether every adult believer accepts reality.
Hwa-jin receives new business¶
Hwa-jin answers a phone call.
YES, NA HWA JIN SPEAKING.
RESULTS READY?
ARE YOU SERIOUS?
I’M IN FRONT OF THE COURTHOUSE.
YES, I’LL HEAD THERE.
Han-rim notices his sudden seriousness.
SUNBAE…?
He says only:
I’VE GOT SOME BUSINESS TO ATTEND TO.
A large caption closes the case:
MISSION CONCLUDED!
New arc — Special Interior Operations¶
The scene changes to a completed building interior. A stern older man addresses a group of laborers with military bearing.
ALL OF YOU GENTLEMEN DESERVE PRAISE.
TODAY MARKS THE COMPLETION OF THE BUILDING’S INTERIOR.
I WILL NOW DISTRIBUTE YOUR PAY.
STEP FORWARD ONE AT A TIME.
A label identifies him as Special Interior Operations Officer Lee Jin-cheon, reserve-corps sergeant.
He hands envelopes to workers, joking that cash lets one man hide money from his wife. Another worker, Go Dong-cheol, is identified as a full-time worker in Special Interior Operations. The men joke that Dong-cheol changed after prison and keeps insisting a father is stronger than a special-forces soldier.
The casual banter stops when Na Hwa-jin arrives. The men straighten and salute.
IT’S BEEN A WHILE.
SALUTE! CAPTAIN NA!
WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF YOUR VISIT, SIR?
Hwa-jin answers:
I BRING GOOD NEWS.
The chapter ends by linking Hwa-jin to a military-style construction team, setting up the next storyline.
