Image 001 — Hyunmin can no longer solve elementary questions¶
A promotional mass-release notice appears at the top.
Hyunmin sits alone at a desk under a single lamp. An open workbook lies before him, but his hand has stopped over the page.
WHAT IS THIS…?
He stares at a simple multiple-choice arithmetic problem.
THIS IS A SIMPLE PROBLEM THAT APPEARS IN THE BEGINNING…
WHY CAN’T I UNDERSTAND THIS SIMPLE THING?
His eye trembles.
NO… IT’S LIKE MY BRAIN HAS BEEN RESET,
I CAN’T REMEMBER ANY FORMULAS!
Image 002 — Panic about losing intelligence¶
Against black, Hyunmin’s thoughts spiral:
WHY AM I SUDDENLY LIKE THIS?
I TOOK A LOT OF MEDICINE!
BUT WHY HAVE I SUDDENLY BECOME STUPID?!
He grips his hair over the open book.
PLEASE, I’M BEGGING… THE COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAM IS NOT FAR AWAY!
A reflected figure in his eye emphasizes the intensity of his fear.
Image 003 — Self-harm¶
Hyunmin repeatedly slams his forehead against the wall or desk area. Blood splashes across the surface with each Korean impact SFX.
REMEMBER! REMEMBER! REMEMBER! REMEMBER!
IF I CAN’T REMEMBER…
Blood runs from his brow.
I MIGHT AS WELL JUST DIE!
He throws his head back for another impact, eyes rolled upward.
Image 004 — Na stops him¶
The title card appears.
A final impact sound and blood splash are shown—but Na catches Hyunmin and pins him safely over the desk before he can continue. Na braces the boy’s upper body with both arms. Hyunmin’s forehead is already bleeding heavily.
Image 005 — Hyunmin collapses into Na’s arms¶
Na looks down at him:
HEY, WHAT’S WRONG WITH YOU? ARE YOU OKAY?!
Hyunmin clings to Na, crying and bleeding:
I’M WRONG… I CAN’T REMEMBER ANYTHING…
I CAN’T DO IT ANYMORE…
Na lifts him and supports most of his weight:
I THINK WE NEED TO TAKE HIM BACK TO THE HOSPITAL.
He moves toward the hall.
PLEASE, MOVE ASIDE.
Hyunmin’s mother stands behind them, frozen.

Na gently touches Hyunmin’s cheek:
HYUNMIN…
The boy is barely conscious, tears running beneath the blood on his face.
His mother suddenly grabs his face from both sides and screams:
WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!
Her concern is not centered on the injury; it immediately becomes anger at his inability to continue.

She shouts directly into Hyunmin’s face:
YOU CAN’T DO IT ANYMORE? YOU CAN’T REMEMBER ANYTHING?!
IS THAT WHAT YOU SAY WITH THE COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAM COMING UP?!
Hyunmin cries helplessly.
Na’s face darkens.
The mother declares:
YEAH, LET’S JUST DIE!
LET’S DIE TOGETHER WITH MOM!
She lunges after Na as he carries Hyunmin away.
WHAT, WHERE ARE YOU GOING NOW?!
Image 008 — Hanrim takes Hyunmin¶
Na opens the apartment door. Hanrim waits in the hall.
TAKE HIM TO THE HOSPITAL.
He transfers Hyunmin’s limp body into Hanrim’s arms.
Hanrim looks past him toward the apartment:
WHAT… ABOUT YOU SENIOR…?
The door slams shut between them. Na remains inside with the mother.

Na faces the mother alone:
HEY, MOVE!
She raises one arm to strike him:
MOVE, I SAID!
Na catches her wrist with a gloved hand.
WHAT KIND OF PARENT ARE YOU?
She gasps and struggles.
Na asks:
IS A COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAM
MORE IMPORTANT THAN YOUR SON’S LIFE?!

She screams back:
OF COURSE, IT’S IMPORTANT!
LOOK AT HOW THE WORLD WORKS THESE DAYS!
SALARIES ARE LOW! THE COST OF LIVING AND HOUSING PRICES ARE INSANE!

Her rage is framed as practical realism, but Na remains unmoved.

The mother continues:
IF YOU CAN’T AT LEAST BECOME A DOCTOR, YOU END UP LIVING LIKE TRASH!
IF IT HELPS HIM GET INTO MEDICAL SCHOOL, I’LL DO ANYTHING! ANYTHING!
Na asks:
SO, YOU’RE SAYING YOU’LL KEEP GIVING HIM THAT MEDICINE UNTIL THE COLLEGE ENTRANCE EXAM?
She waves a fistful of papers:
IT WORKED, DIDN’T IT?! THIS MEDICINE IS REAL!
Na looks away and decides:
FINE…

Hyunmin sits barefoot on the bed edge, hands twisting together.
Na places a timer on the table and explains:
THIS IS A MOCK EXAM THAT YOU HAVEN’T SEEN BEFORE. WE’LL CONDUCT IT IN THE SAME AMOUNT OF TIME.
Hanrim stands behind him. Hyunmin’s mother sits on a hospital sofa watching intensely.
Hyunmin asks:
TEACHER, CAN I TAKE THE MEDICINE BEFORE THE TEST?
I CAN’T CONCENTRATE WITHOUT IT…
Na answers:
NO.
THE TEST STARTS NOW.

Hyunmin writes while his mother watches with clasped hands.

Na asks:

The mother snatches through the papers.
HIS GRADES HAVE DROPPED SO MUCH THAT HE CAN’T EVEN AIM FOR A TOP UNIVERSITY IN SEOUL, LET ALONE MEDICAL SCHOOL.
Na explains:
ACCORDING TO ACADEMIC STUDIES, WHEN PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT ADHD PATIENTS TAKE ADHD MEDICATION,
IT MAY ONLY CAUSE SIDE EFFECTS, AND RESEARCH INDICATES THAT COGNITIVE FUNCTIONS CAN ACTUALLY DECREASE.

Na concludes:

Hyunmin lowers his eyes.

The mother trembles while clutching the test papers.

Hyunmin curls defensively over the hospital table.
She wheels toward Na:
SO, YOU REALLY WANT TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL THAT BADLY?
Na raises a hand:
ALRIGHT. I, AS A MINISTRY OF EDUCATION OFFICIAL, WILL SHOW YOU THE SUREFIRE WAY.

Na smiles:

The mother stares in confusion:
WHAT…?
A chair suddenly drops or she is forced backward into it.
AHH!
She finds herself inside Hyunmin’s cramped study space.

Na closes the door from outside.

The mother pounds on the locked door:

Na presses a hand against the other side.
THIS IS THE WAY.
He explains:
IF YOU REALLY WANT TO GO TO MEDICAL SCHOOL, YOU STUDY AND PASS YOURSELF!
The mother screams:
WHAT?!

Chapter-level continuity notes¶
The “medicine” has impaired the skill it was supposed to improve¶
Hyunmin’s terror begins when he discovers that basic problems and familiar formulas are inaccessible. The mock exam demonstrates that the stimulant did not reveal hidden ability; dependence, overdose, sleep loss, and adverse effects have severely damaged his performance.
The mother treats grades as a moral debt¶
She repeatedly describes the medication as something expensive that she “gave” him, making Hyunmin responsible for producing a return on investment. His apology is met with assault because she interprets his illness as ingratitude.
Na transfers responsibility back to the adult¶
Instead of debating whether becoming a doctor is admirable, Na accepts her premise and applies it to her. If medical school is worth sacrificing a life for, she can sacrifice her own comfort and study herself. The locked study room turns Hyunmin’s daily confinement into a direct lesson.
Hyunmin is removed before the mother is disciplined¶
Na first passes the injured student to Hanrim and orders immediate hospitalization. The confrontation with the mother occurs only after the child is physically separated from her, preventing her from using him as leverage during the argument.
The chapter rejects productivity myths around non-prescribed stimulants¶
Na explicitly states that medication taken by people without ADHD can produce side effects and even reduce cognitive function. Within the story, the controlled mock exam serves as practical proof against the mother’s belief that better results justify any risk.
