The chapter contains sustained child abuse, sexualized humiliation, forced ingestion, confinement, beatings, food deprivation, and discussion of trauma.
Reader Images 001–002 — The complaint is identified¶
While Na drives the agency car, Daniel reads the red-file testimony.
The letter identifies its writer:
HELLO. I AM MINHYE SEO, A THIRD-YEAR MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENT WHO ATTENDED DOWON GYEONGDANG THREE YEARS AGO.
The scene moves into Minhye’s memory. As a sixth-grade elementary student, she stands before the school staff and introduces herself:
NICE TO MEET YOU. I AM MINHYE SEO, A SIXTH-GRADE ELEMENTARY STUDENT.
I CAME HERE TO RECEIVE ETIQUETTE TRAINING DURING THIS SUMMER VACATION.
Her parents believe she may have attention difficulties:
MY PARENTS SUSPECT THAT I MIGHT HAVE ATTENTION DEFICIT DISORDER,
PLEASE TAKE GOOD CARE OF ME.
She is left at the remote school with a suitcase while adults exchange polite smiles.
Reader Images 003–004 — The beautiful school initially seems exciting¶
Narration explains:
THEY SENT ME TO THIS SCHOOL FOR ETIQUETTE TRAINING DURING MY SIXTH-GRADE SUMMER VACATION.
At first, Minhye is confused by restrictions such as losing access to her phone:
AT FIRST, I WONDERED WHY THEY SENT ME TO A PLACE WHERE I COULDN’T EVEN USE MY CELL PHONE,
The school is surrounded by mountain forests, streams, flowers, and students of many ages.
BUT WITH THE BEAUTIFUL NATURAL SCENERY AND FRIENDS OF VARIOUS AGES,
I THOUGHT IT MIGHT ACTUALLY BE FUN.
The memory snaps into violence.
BUT THAT PLACE WAS—
An older girl pins Minhye down and orders:
STAY STILL~
YOU B*1CH~!
Another voice casually asks:
SHOULDN’T THE CHILDREN BRUSH THEIR TEETH AND GO TO BED?
Minhye is forcibly held while liquid, foam, or a contaminated object is pressed into her mouth. She chokes:
UGH! UGH!
COUGH!
Narration concludes:
STAINED WITH VIOLENCE AND HELL.
THAT’S WHAT IT WAS.
Reader Images 005–006 — A school built like a prison¶
Minhye describes the location:
DOWON GYEONGDANG IS LOCATED ON A MOUNTAINSIDE 40 MINUTES AWAY BY CAR FROM THE—
The missing destination is obscured by the scanlation transition, but the meaning is clear: it is far from town and outside easy walking distance.
A BEAUTIFUL PLACE UNTOUCHED BY HUMANS,
WHERE NATURE AND ANIMALS COEXIST.
She is shown struggling and gasping under abuse while the idyllic landscape remains outside.
BUT ON THE FLIP SIDE IT’S COMPLETELY ISOLATED FROM THE OUTSIDE,
A NATURAL PRISON IN ITSELF.
Reader Images 007–009 — The dorm leader and normalized cruelty¶
Minhye explains that some students arrived for nature-based education:
WHILE THERE ARE KIDS LIKE ME WHO CAME HERE TO LEARN AMIDST NATURE.
A female dorm leader wakes her violently:
GOOD MORNING~ MINHYE-CHAN~
The girl dumps water, strikes the bed, or otherwise startles her awake.
THIS IS THE MORNING CALL, SEODANG STYLE~
DOES IT WAKE YOU UP?
YOU SHOULD’VE WOKEN UP EARLIER, YOU S*UT~!
Narration identifies the other population:
THERE WERE ALSO MANY VIOLENT DELINQUENTS LIKE THE DORM LEADER.
VIOLENCE WAS THE NORM.
The abuse includes:
BEING DUNKED IN TOILET WATER, HAVING SOCKS STUFFED IN YOUR MOUTH WHILE SLEEPING,
BEING FED BUGS OR URINE,
BEING TIED TO A TREE…
Minhye adds:
AND… I SUFFERED FROM ACTS TOO HORRENDOUS TO WRITE DOWN HERE.
The omission itself communicates that the listed acts are not the worst of what happened.
Reader Images 010–011 — The principal punishes disclosure¶
Unable to endure any more, Minhye reports the abuse:
UNABLE TO BEAR IT ANY LONGER, I TOLD EVERYTHING TO THE PRINCIPAL.
She raises her sleeves or clothing to show visible injuries:
I SHOWED MY WOUNDS AND BEGGED TO BE SENT HOME,
The principal refuses to believe her:
BUT HE ALSO ACCUSED ME OF LYING
He beats her with a long wooden stick:
AND BEAT ME WITH A STICK UNTIL I PASSED OUT
She is then thrown into a dark storage room:
THEN LOCKED ME IN A STOREROOM WITHOUT GIVING ME WATER OR FOOD.
The school has already confiscated her phone:
I COULDN’T CALL HOME BECAUSE MY PHONE WAS CONFISCATED
AND I HAD NO ONE TO TURN TO.
The administration does not fail to notice abuse. It actively isolates and punishes the victim who reports it.
Reader Images 012–014 — Suchan becomes her only ally¶
Narration says:
IN THIS HELL, THERE WAS ONLY ONE PERSON ON MY SIDE.
A boy secretly enters or approaches the storeroom with food.
HURRY, EAT THIS, MINHYE.
IT WAS SUCHAN, A BOY IN THE SAME GRADE AS ME.
SUCHAN HAD COME TO SEODANG ABOUT THREE MONTHS BEFORE I DID.
Because he is the only child her age, they become close:
BEING THE ONLY CHILD OF THE SAME AGE, WE GOT ALONG PARTICULARLY WELL.
Suchan makes a small handmade object or gift for her:
LOOK, I MADE THIS FOR YOU.
Minhye explains:
DESPITE FACING HARSHER BULLYING IN THE BOYS’ ROOM,
HE WAS ALWAYS KIND AND COMFORTING TO ME.
He gives her contraband food:
HURRY UP AND EAT, THEN GIVE ME THE WRAPPER.
IF YOU’RE CAUGHT, IT’LL BE TROUBLE.
She wonders whether desperation and his kindness made her ask:

Reader Images 015–016 — The nighttime escape¶
Minhye acknowledges the danger in retrospect:
LOOKING BACK, RUNNING AWAY INTO THE MOUNTAINS AT NIGHT WAS A TRULY DANGEROUS DECISION.
BUT I WAS SO DESPERATE TO ESCAPE THIS HELL THAT I COULDN’T THINK OF THE—
The final word is cut by the transition, but the meaning is that she could not think rationally about the risk.
Adults or older students search the forest with flashlights:
WHERE ARE YOU, YOU BRATS!
DO YOU THINK YOU CAN ESCAPE THIS MOUNTAIN?!
COME OUT BEFORE A WILD BEAR MAULS YOU, YOU BRATS!
Suchan spots a faint light below:
LOOK DOWN THERE.
CAN YOU SEE THE FAINT LIGHT? IT’S PROBABLY A STREETLIGHT ON THE ROAD.
He tells Minhye:
WAIT THERE AND ASK FOR HELP FROM A PASSING CAR.
I’LL GO BACK AND BUY SOME TIME, SO HURRY.
She refuses:
WHAT ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT?! WE HAVE TO GO TOGETHER!
Suchan reveals that he never expected to escape:
I NEVER PLANNED TO RUN AWAY IN THE FIRST PLACE.
I HAVE NOWHERE TO GO ANYWAY.
He sends her onward:
BE CAREFUL GOING BACK~
Reader Images 017–018 — Suchan is recaptured¶
Suchan walks back toward the searchers and is immediately assaulted.
HEY, YOU F*CKING BASTARD! YOU WANT TO DIE THAT BADLY?!
TELL ME!
SPEAK UP, YOU BASTARD!
He absorbs the punishment so the search remains focused on him rather than Minhye.
Narration states:
THANKS TO SUCHAN, I WAS ABLE TO SAFELY RETURN HOME.
Minhye tells her parents everything:
I TOLD MY PARENTS EVERYTHING THAT HAPPENED AT THE SCHOOL,
But they reinterpret the abuse as ordinary discipline:
BUT THEY THOUGHT I JUST RAN AWAY BECAUSE IT WAS A BIT TOUGH… AND THEY EVEN CALLED THE PRINCIPAL TO APOLOGIZE.
The parental apology reinforces the school’s version of events and leaves Suchan inside.
Reader Images 019–020 — Three years later, Suchan is still there¶
After several years, Minhye remains traumatized:
JUST A FEW YEARS AFTER THOSE THREE YEARS HAD PASSED,
HAUNTED BY THE NIGHTMARES OF THAT TIME, I SUDDENLY DECIDED TO VISIT THE SCHOOL’S WEBSITE…
The site still lists:
LEE SUCHAN (9TH GRADE)
Narration states:
EVEN AFTER THREE YEARS,
SUCHAN WAS STILL AT THAT SCHOOL.
SINCE THAT DAY, I HAVE BEEN HAUNTED BY THE GUILT OF HAVING LEFT HIM BEHIND.
I HAVE BEEN UNABLE TO SLEEP PROPERLY.
Her appeal concludes:
I BEG THE EDUCATION AUTHORITY. PLEASE SHUT DOWN THAT HELLISH SCHOOL.
IF THAT’S NOT POSSIBLE, AT LEAST SAVE SUCHAN!
The chapter returns to the present. Daniel and Na have reached Dowon Gyeongdang’s closed entrance. There is no doorbell.
THERE’S NO DOORBELL…
HOW DO I GET IN?
A sign instructs:
VISITORS SHOULD KNOCK ON THE DOOR
Daniel knocks forcefully. When a student or staff member opens it, he says:
I’VE COME TO SEE THE PRINCIPAL. IS HE IN?
The person asks:
ARE YOU MASTER’S… GUEST?
Daniel is told:
PLEASE WAIT OUTSIDE FOR A MOMENT.
The chapter ends with the inspectors standing at the threshold of the institution described in Minhye’s testimony.
Chapter-level continuity notes¶
The natural setting is part of the control system¶
The mountains, streams, and distance from town initially appear therapeutic. The same remoteness removes phones, witnesses, transportation, and any realistic route to help. Beauty becomes camouflage for confinement.
The school punishes disclosure more harshly than abuse¶
The principal sees Minhye’s wounds and does not merely dismiss them. He beats her unconscious and withholds food and water. The institution’s central rule is therefore secrecy, not etiquette.
Suchan’s sacrifice is deliberate¶
He never planned to escape because he believes he has nowhere to return. His role in the attempt is to guide Minhye to the road and draw the searchers back toward himself. The violence he receives is the price of her survival.
Minhye’s parents unknowingly reinforce the abusers¶
By apologizing to the principal, they confirm the school’s claim that Minhye is merely disobedient. The chapter shows how respectable language about discipline and character training can persuade parents to ignore direct testimony.
The complaint reaches the agency only years later¶
Minhye remains haunted because Suchan is still enrolled. Her request is not revenge for the past alone; it is an urgent rescue appeal for someone she believes is still being tortured.
Daniel’s first test begins at the gate¶
The chapter ends before entry is granted. His nonviolent philosophy will have to operate inside an isolated institution whose staff control communication, redefine abuse as education, and treat outsiders as intruders.
