The chapter opens at Dowon Gyeongdang. Daniel sits across from the principal in a traditional-style office.
The principal studies his application:

Daniel gives the cover story prepared for the operation:
MY FATHER IS AMERICAN, AND MY MOTHER IS KOREAN.
I’VE ALWAYS ADMIRED MY MOTHER’S COUNTRY SINCE I WAS YOUNG, ESPECIALLY INTERESTED IN KOREA’S TRADITIONAL CULTURE.
SO, I THOUGHT THIS PLACE WOULD BE IDEAL FOR TEACHING CHILDREN WHILE
LEARNING ABOUT KOREA’S UNIQUE CULTURE, WHICH IS WHY I CAME HERE.
The principal asks:
YOU’RE HERE FOR AN INTERVIEW?
A caption explains that the school has struggled to recruit:

A brief flashback shows Na explaining the infiltration plan:

Daniel had worried:

Suchan leads Daniel to a small, traditional room:

He notices Daniel has arrived without luggage:

Daniel answers:
I DIDN’T EXPECT TO BE ACCEPTED SO QUICKLY.
I’LL RECEIVE MY LUGGAGE TOMORROW THROUGH A FRIEND.
Suchan responds:
IS THAT SO? THEN LET’S MOVE ON TO THE CLASSROOM.
Daniel stops him:
WAIT, LET’S CHAT FOR A MOMENT.
He observes:
FROM THE WAY YOU’RE SHOWING ME AROUND, YOU SEEM LIKE THE STUDENT LEADER HERE…

Suchan says the concern is understandable:
IT’S UNDERSTANDABLE THAT SUCH RUMORS EXIST.
THIS SCHOOL HAD ITS SHARE OF ODD CHARACTERS.
He refers to his own past:
BACK IN THE DAY, I MYSELF WAS BULLIED QUITE A BIT UP UNTIL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
But he insists that the danger has disappeared:
BUT NOW,
THERE’S NOT A SINGLE ONE OF THOSE ODD CHARACTERS LEFT.
MASTER, THERE’S NOTHING FOR YOU TO WORRY ABOUT.
OUR KIDS ARE REALLY KIND!
Suchan’s calm smile and clean appearance offer no visible evidence of the terrified child described in Minhye’s letter.
He invites Daniel to meet the others.

A group of students plays Red Light, Green Light together in the courtyard.
RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT~
Their movements stop in cheerful unison. No one appears injured, isolated, or frightened.
Suchan calls:
EVERYONE, ATTENTION.
I’D LIKE TO INTRODUCE SOMEONE.
THIS PERSON WILL START TEACHING ENGLISH STARTING TOMORROW…
Daniel introduces himself:
I AM HYUN DANIEL.
I PREFER TO BE CALLED HYUN RATHER THAN DANIEL,
Suchan imposes the school’s preferred honorific:
SO YOU SHOULD ALL CALL HIM MASTER HYUN, GOT IT?
The children react with genuine excitement:

Daniel smiles and says:

The bright, polite enthusiasm makes the complaint appear almost impossible.

At night, Suchan delivers bedding to Daniel’s room.
HERE IS YOUR BEDDING, MASTER.
IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE YOU NEED?
Daniel answers:
AH, THAT’S… I’M GOOD…
THEN, HAVE A COMFORTABLE NIGHT.
After Suchan leaves, Daniel calls Na.
AH, SENIOR, I KEPT CALLING YOU…
Na apologizes from the agency car:
AHEM~ SORRY~!
I WAS WAITING AND FELL ASLEEP IN THE CAR, AND NOW IT’S THE MIDDLE OF THE NIGHT…
WHAT’S HAPPENING? WHY HAVEN’T YOU ARRIVED YET?
Daniel explains:
I-I PASSED.
THEY TOLD ME TO START WORKING IMMEDIATELY, SO GETTING TO THE CAR WAS A BIT…
Na laughs at how readily the principal accepted the unpaid offer:
OH, IS THAT WHAT HAPPENED? THAT PRINCIPAL’S DRIVE IS REALLY SOMETHING~
Na asks:
DID YOU… GET TO TALK TO SUCHAN OR THE OTHER STUDENTS?
Daniel answers:
YES, I TALKED TO ALL OF THEM.
SUCHAN MENTIONED THAT THERE USED TO BE STUDENTS WHO WERE QUITE VIOLENT, BUT NOT ANYMORE.
He considers whether they may simply have hidden the truth:
WAS IT JUST BECAUSE IT WAS THE FIRST MEETING THAT THEY DIDN’T SPEAK HONESTLY?
But his observations are specific:
NO… I DIDN’T SEE ANY SIGNS OF BULLYING. THEIR FACES WERE CLEAN.
CONTRARY TO OUR FEARS, THEY WERE VERY BRIGHT, POLITE…
SUCH GOOD KIDS WITHOUT A SHADOW OF DARKNESS.
Na responds:
OH~ THAT’S GOOD~
SO, CAN WE SAY THE PROBLEM IS SOLVED?
Daniel does not agree:
BUT THE FACT THAT THE KID IS TOO BRIGHT BRINGS ABOUT OTHER CONCERNS.
Images 039–048 — Nighttime violence returns¶
Elsewhere in the dormitory, a student is dragged toward a washroom. The aggressors use an ordinary bedtime rule as their excuse:
KIDS NEED TO BRUSH THEIR TEETH BEFORE BED!
YOU LITTLE…
ROTTEN AND COMPLAINING AT YOUR AGE?
The victim struggles while several students hold him.
Daniel hears the disturbance and follows.
He asks:
WHAT ARE YOU DOING NOW?
A student responds innocently:
AH, SUCHAN’S HYUNG…
THIS KID WON’T BRUSH HIS TEETH BEFORE BED…
Suchan stands among the aggressors rather than protecting the victim.
Someone comments on the object or liquid being forced toward the child’s mouth:
AH~ IT SMELLS LIKE URINE~
DID YOU GUYS PEE HERE?
Daniel asks coldly:
DO YOU FIND THIS KIND OF THING FUNNY?
The children stare back without shame.

During the phone call, Na understands Daniel’s concern:
TOO BRIGHT AND CAUSING WORRIES…? AH~ I SEE WHAT YOU MEAN NOW.
Daniel says:
YES, FROM WHAT I’VE SEEN, SUCHAN SEEMS TO BE AMONG THE TOP STUDENTS.
Inside the washroom, Suchan’s expression changes completely. He smiles with the same delighted cruelty once directed at him.
The students laugh:
AHAHAHAH~!
AHAHA!
They pull the victim’s mouth open and prepare to force the contaminated object or liquid inside.
Suchan announces:
HERE COMES THE FUN PART, YOU GUYS!
He tells them:
HOLD ON TIGHT! IF YOU MOVE, IT WILL SPLASH ON YOU!
The victim screams while the group laughs.
Images 057–058 — Daniel’s fear is confirmed¶
Daniel concludes over the phone:
IF THE CULTURE OF THIS SCHOOL HASN’T CHANGED,
IF SUCHAN HAS BECOME ONE OF THE TOP STUDENTS…
WHICH MEANS…
FOR A VICTIM TO TURN INTO AN AGGRESSOR,
IT WOULD BE THE PERFECT ENVIRONMENT FOR THAT.
The final image shows Suchan glancing back with a satisfied half-smile.
Daniel states:
UNFORTUNATELY, IT SEEMS THAT MY PREMONITION HAS HIT THE MARK.

Chapter-level continuity notes¶
The principal’s hiring process reveals institutional vulnerability¶
Daniel is hired almost immediately because he offers to work without salary. The school values obedience and cheap labor more than verification, allowing an outsider to enter with only a flattering story about traditional culture.
The students’ brightness is itself suspicious¶
The absence of visible bruises and the unusually polished behavior do not disprove the complaint. Daniel recognizes that a closed institution can train students to perform happiness and direct violence away from public spaces.
Suchan has survived by moving upward¶
Minhye remembers him as the only compassionate child in the school. Three years later, he is a student leader trusted by the principal and obeyed by younger children. His status appears to have been purchased by adopting the institution’s cruelty.
Abuse is disguised as hygiene and education¶
The aggressors frame the assault as making a child brush his teeth. This mirrors the school’s broader practice of converting sadism into etiquette, spiritual correction, or communal discipline.
Daniel begins with observation rather than force¶
He does not expose his identity or intervene before understanding the hierarchy. His report to Na identifies the systemic mechanism: in an unchanged culture, victims are incentivized to become perpetrators because rank is the only available protection.
The chapter’s central tragedy¶
Suchan’s transformation does not erase his victimhood, but it creates new victims. Daniel’s nonviolent philosophy will now have to confront someone whose survival strategy is inseparable from the power he abuses.
