The chapter opens on the tattooed man’s inner narration. A high-school-aged Hee Chang attacks another student in front of cheering classmates.
IF YOU PISS ME OFF,
EVERYONE HAD TO BE BEATEN!
He describes the identity he built at school:
I ALWAYS WANTED TO BE A KING.
LIKE THE LION OF THE JUNGLE… LIKE THE EAGLE OF THE SKY.
NOT BEING PREYED UPON BY ANYONE.
THE APEX OF THE FOOD CHAIN!
Until middle school, his intimidation worked. No one contradicted him, everyone wanted his friendship, and he interpreted fear as admiration.
A student bumps his shoulder in a crowded hallway. The boy apologizes immediately:
OUCH!
AH, I’M SORRY.
Hee Chang touches his shoulder and sneers:
MY SHOULDER SEEMS DISLOCATED. IT HURTS LIKE HELL!
SORRY?
He decides that the apology is an opportunity for extortion.
Reader Images 004–006 — A “king” collapses when money enters the conflict¶
Hee Chang’s attack badly injures the student, who requires a twelve-week medical leave. The victim’s parents demand accountability and threaten criminal action.
HOW DID YOU EDUCATE YOUR CHILD?!
I’M SORRY… I’M SORRY…
The settlement is 15 million won, an impossible sum for Hee Chang’s family. His father rushes from work and repeatedly kneels before the victim’s mother:
I WOULD DO ANYTHING. JUST PLEASE FORGIVE US…
Hee Chang narrates:
I THOUGHT I WAS AT THE TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN,
BUT I WAS JUST A WORTHLESS IDIOT WITHOUT MONEY.
The boy who called himself king has to watch his parents beg. Even when he dominated classmates physically, adults with money and legal leverage could reduce him to helplessness.
Reader Images 007–009 — A successful alumnus offers another hierarchy¶
Hee Chang sees the social-media account of an alumnus from his school with approximately 78K followers. The man displays luxury cars, designer items, alcohol, and an image of effortless dominance.
The alumnus messages him:
WONDERING WHO’S CREEPING ON MY IG… AND IT’S THE MOST SUCCESSFUL JUNIOR FROM THIS NEIGHBORHOOD?
JUNIOR, SHALL WE MEET UP?
Hee Chang is impressed that someone from the same “crappy school” appears to have escaped into wealth and power.
The alumnus sends an address. It leads to Moonlight, a glamorous private club or room-salon establishment. A suited attendant greets Hee Chang:
YOU MUST BE CHOI HEE CHANG, RIGHT?
I’VE BEEN WAITING FOR YOU. PLEASE, COME IN.
Hee Chang recognizes the place as something from movies rather than ordinary teenage life.
Reader Images 010–012 — His first meeting with the chairman¶
Hee Chang enters a private room filled with older men, expensive alcohol, food, and hostesses. The alumnus pulls him into the group:
SO, JUNIOR, YOU’RE HERE.
COME SIT DOWN!
Hee Chang is introduced to the organization’s chairman. The chairman pours him a drink and says:
THAT’S NOT IT, KID!
YOU HAD TO KNEEL BECAUSE YOU DIDN’T HAVE MONEY.
He promises that money can prevent anyone from making him bow again:
JUST OPEN YOUR MOUTH AND LET ME STUFF IT WITH MONEY, AND YOU’LL SEE. THAT KID WILL SAY THANK YOU FOR BEATING HIM UP, RIGHT?
Hee Chang watches the gangsters laugh and realizes he has found a hierarchy that rewards the cruelty that previously cost his family money.
He narrates:
THAT WAS MY FIRST MEETING WITH THE CHAIRMAN.
He later spills his humiliating story while drinking:
WHAT CAN I DO, IT WAS MY FAULT…
The chairman transforms that shame into recruitment.
Reader Images 013–015 — Money, clothes, and visible status¶
The chairman assures Hee Chang that the 15 million won settlement is insignificant to the organization.
BUT… IT’S 15 MILLION WON?
HAHAHA!
He orders Hee Chang to prepare a set of clothes and start working. Hee Chang is given bundles of cash:
HOW MUCH DO YOU THINK THIS IS?
JUST FOR THESE THREE BUNDLES, TO KNEEL IN LIFE…
The implication is that money will reverse the humiliation his father endured.
Hee Chang reports daily earnings, receives luxury clothing, and displays increasingly elaborate tattoos. Schoolmates celebrate his graduation and defer to him as though he has become an adult authority.
An alumnus asks whether he dressed properly, and Hee Chang opens his shirt to show off:

The tattoos are a uniform of belonging, intimidation, and access to the gang’s status.
Reader Images 016–018 — Hee Chang mistakes criminal backing for invulnerability¶
Hee Chang rides in a luxury vehicle while associates point toward ordinary pedestrians:
LOOK AT THOSE PIGS OVER THERE.
He thinks:
WE’RE TRULY AT THE APEX OF THE FOOD CHAIN.
NO ONE CAN TOUCH US!
He looks at the people outside and imagines that he now lives a completely different life from the “creatures” beneath him.
Then Gu Sera’s punch lands.
Hee Chang collapses, stunned:
THIS MOTHERF*CKER…!
Sera grabs his face and mockingly announces:
FACIAL RECOGNITION SCANNER ACTIVATES.
She identifies him as a Gangsan High School alumnus and recalls his reputation from her first or second year.
Hee Chang cannot understand the force of the blow:
WHAT’S THIS… I THOUGHT I WAS GOOD AT FIGHTING…
BUT I’VE NEVER BEEN HIT BY FISTS LIKE THIS…!
AND IT’S A WOMAN?
His imagined position at the apex collapses again—this time before someone physically stronger who has no interest in his social status.

Sera crouches in front of Hee Chang with an excited, almost manic smile. She asks whether he thinks having tattoos makes everyone afraid:
HEY, YOU THINK JUST BECAUSE SOMEONE HAS TATTOOS, EVERYONE’S GONNA BE SCARED?
YOU THINK YOU’RE SOME KIND OF GANGSTER?
Hee Chang weakly repeats:
GANGSTER…?
Sera offers an alternative:
OTHERWISE, I’LL CALL ALL THE HYUNGS TO TEAR YOU APART…
Then she asks for the whole chain of command:
PREFERABLY THE WHOLE ORGANIZATION! ESPECIALLY THE TOP BRASS!

Her eyes sparkle because dismantling a major network could secure her civil-service position.
I’M REALLY DESPERATE HERE!
Hee Chang, frightened, starts kneeling and begging:
THERE… I KNELT.
I’M KNEELING AND BEGGING LIKE THIS.
Sera refuses the submission:
PLEASE CALL THOSE HYUNGS.
Hee Chang realizes the problem is bigger than an ordinary street fight. Sera insists he use his phone and summon everyone.
IF I SOLVE THIS, I’M A FULL-TIME EMPLOYEE!
YOU’LL CALL THEM, RIGHT? WON’T YOU?
The chapter ends with Sera smiling brightly over the terrified recruit.
Chapter-level continuity notes¶
Hee Chang’s “king” identity is built on fear¶
He interprets classmates avoiding conflict as proof of superiority. The moment a victim’s family uses law and money, his authority disappears, revealing that his status never existed outside the school hierarchy.
Poverty is exploited as a recruitment tool¶
The chairman does not merely offer cash. He offers a story in which money transforms humiliation into dominance. Hee Chang’s family settlement becomes the emotional wound through which the organization recruits him.
Social media manufactures the appearance of criminal success¶
Luxury cars, expensive alcohol, followers, and carefully framed photographs hide the coercive structure behind the alumnus’s life. Hee Chang sees the finished image before seeing the obedience demanded inside it.
The organization reproduces school bullying at a larger scale¶
Hee Chang moves from extorting classmates to collecting earnings and intimidating adults. The moral rule remains the same: people without power kneel, while those backed by money and numbers may do whatever they want.
Sera is motivated by both justice and career panic¶
She intervenes against a violent bully, but her excitement about summoning the entire organization is tied to becoming a permanent civil servant. Her desperation risks turning the investigation into a personal performance.
The cliffhanger reverses Hee Chang’s defining humiliation¶
He joined the gang because he never wanted to kneel again. By the chapter’s end, he is kneeling before Sera—and even that does not satisfy her, because she wants access to the people whose backing made him believe he was untouchable.
