Images 001–003 — Cheolyong is brought back under agency supervision¶
The chapter opens with Lee Cheolyong, the red-haired, tattooed student from the beach incident, being physically brought before the school administration. His nose and face remain heavily bandaged from Hanrim’s earlier strike.
Na Hwa-jin keeps him under firm control while teachers and administrators react with alarm. Cheolyong protests that everyone is making too much of what he calls a “little joke.” He insists that the substitute teacher was never seriously harmed and says the entire matter was exaggerated by adults who dislike him.
The school’s administrator focuses less on the teacher’s injuries than on the spectacle of a student being handled by the Teachers’ Rights Protection Agency. The room immediately reveals the school’s priorities: institutional embarrassment is treated as more urgent than the months of harassment that produced the case.
Hanrim remains undercover as a bob-haired substitute physical-education teacher using the name Yoo Seoyeon or “Miss Yu.” Cheolyong does not fully connect her to the red-haired woman who struck him during the trip.

Cheolyong challenges the agency:
IF YOU DON’T BELIEVE ME, ASK THE OTHER SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS.
He is confident because he understands the school’s employment structure. Temporary teachers are unlikely to testify when a principal can simply refuse to renew their contracts.
Hanrim and Na discuss the problem outside the immediate confrontation. Hanrim wants to punish Cheolyong directly, but Na points out that the incident is larger than one violent student. If the agency intervenes only through force, the permanent staff can label it an exceptional disturbance and the substitute teachers will remain silent afterward.
The plan is therefore to leave Hanrim undercover long enough to observe the ordinary treatment of a substitute who openly reports a teachers’ rights violation.
Na notes that, without victim testimony and a broader record, Cheolyong may receive only a short suspension. The student’s confidence comes from years of watching complaints disappear.
Images 007–009 — The daily work assigned to a disposable teacher¶
Back in the staff office, Hanrim is handed a furious parent phone call.
The parent complains about a performance assessment, grades, and the possibility that the child’s record may be damaged. Permanent teachers tell Hanrim to calm the parent by agreeing with everything rather than defending the school’s judgment.
Before she can prepare for class, the vice principal adds a growing list of errands:
- remove weeds from the flower bed,
- visit the post office,
- answer complaints,
- carry materials,
- handle miscellaneous homeroom work,
- and cover duties other teachers do not want.
The requests are presented as small favors, but together they consume the workday. Hanrim realizes that substitute teachers are expected to perform the same classroom labor as permanent staff while also absorbing undesirable chores.
Images 010–012 — Lee Seoni explains the unspoken rule¶
A genuine substitute teacher, Lee Seoni, speaks quietly with Hanrim.
She explains that the treatment is ordinary. Fixed-term teachers may receive homeroom responsibilities, student guidance, parent calls, paperwork, and after-school duties, but they do not possess the security needed to object.
Permanent teachers sometimes say:
IF YOU WANT TO BE TREATED EQUALLY, PASS THE EXAM.
Others argue that no one forced them to become substitutes.
Seoni asks why one national recruitment examination should determine whether a person performing the same hours and responsibilities deserves basic respect. She is not demanding automatic permanent employment; she wants a workplace where temporary teachers can speak without risking rent, medical bills, or the next contract.
Hanrim thinks that the silence surrounding the case now makes painful sense. The teachers are not unaware of their rights. They cannot afford to exercise them.
Images 013–015 — The principal summons “Miss Yu”¶
The principal calls Hanrim into his office.
He criticizes her for reporting the student’s conduct above the school level and says she bypassed the proper chain of command. His language suggests that preserving the school’s reputation is part of a substitute teacher’s job.
He tells her that someone who creates conflict does not belong in education. A temporary worker, he says, should focus on teaching and avoid turning every student prank into an institutional incident.
Hanrim answers that Cheolyong’s conduct included physical assault and sustained humiliation. The principal dismisses that distinction.
He begins pressuring her to resign.
Images 016–018 — Contract insecurity becomes an explicit weapon¶
Hanrim refuses to submit a resignation letter.
She says:
EVERY TEACHER HAS THE RIGHT TO REPORT AN INFRINGEMENT OF TEACHERS’ RIGHTS.
The principal’s tone turns openly contemptuous. He calls her a low-level contract worker and says he can end her employment whenever he wants.
He also threatens her future. Even if she leaves this school, administrators talk to one another; a teacher known for creating “problems” can find every next application quietly rejected.
The threat confirms what Seoni described. The system does not need a formal blacklist. A few phone calls and nonrenewals are enough.
Hanrim’s expression changes. She has obtained direct evidence that the administration punishes reporting rather than abuse.
Images 019–022 — Hanrim reveals the power difference¶
The principal keeps lecturing, certain that a substitute has no way to answer.
Hanrim suddenly seizes him by the collar or throat and drives him backward. Her wig or disguise shifts, revealing the red hair and predatory expression associated with her real identity.
The principal’s confidence collapses.
Hanrim tells him that a Ministry-affiliated field inspector has powers a temporary teacher does not. A principal who knowingly suppresses abuse, retaliates against complainants, and fabricates employment consequences can be removed from office and may jeopardize retirement benefits or severance.
She holds him close enough that he can see she is no longer asking for professional courtesy.
The visual reversal is complete: moments earlier he described her as disposable labor; now his own position depends on what the inspector records.
The chapter ends on the principal’s terrified face inside Hanrim’s grip.
