Strip 001 — Hanrim and Daniel finish their first joint assignment¶
At the TRPA office, Daniel Hyun stands beside Hanrim’s desk holding a completed bundle of paperwork.
Hanrim says she has finished one of the five reports assigned to them, including the inspection logs. Daniel says he added a few details and asks her to review them.
Hanrim scans the pages and immediately approves the additions.
PERFECT AS ALWAYS! LET’S SEND THESE OVER TO THE TEAM LEADER FOR APPROVAL.
Daniel asks whether they should go home.
Hanrim is delighted by how quickly the work moved with another capable inspector beside her. She says she normally has to nag Sera repeatedly to finish paperwork.
Daniel tells her that, because she helped him complete his own assignment, he can leave on time too.
Hanrim tries to thank him formally, then abruptly changes direction.
This is the first time the two of them have been paired together without the rest of the team.
She asks whether Daniel has plans for the evening.
HOW ABOUT A DRINK? MY TREAT!
The strip ends outside a barbecue-and-drinks restaurant.
Strip 002 — Hanrim vents about Sera for two hours¶
Two hours later, the table is covered with grilled meat, side dishes, and empty beer glasses.
Hanrim is still drinking heavily and talking almost entirely about Gu Sera.
She complains that Sera causes trouble, refuses instructions, and makes her senior look incompetent.
Daniel notices that Hanrim has been “badmouthing Sera nonstop” for nearly two hours.
At first he assumes she is simply enjoying alcohol.
Then he realizes she does not actually look happy.
Even while eating and drinking at an almost superhuman pace, she seems to be using the conversation to release something she normally keeps tightly controlled.
Daniel knows Hanrim is not the kind of subordinate who casually criticizes a junior in front of a superior officer.
Her anger is mixed with worry, guilt, and accumulated exhaustion.
He decides not to interrupt.
In Korean folklore and metaphor, a “bamboo forest” is a private place where someone can shout a secret without being judged. Daniel thinks that, for the night, he is serving as Hanrim’s bamboo forest—a place where she can vent freely without the complaints becoming an official accusation against Sera.
Strip 003 — Daniel analyzes the Sunghwan case and Hanrim’s instincts¶
After releasing some of the tension, Hanrim looks refreshed.
Daniel says the recent case involving Lee Sunghwan genuinely surprised him.
He never expected Sunghwan to be foolish or desperate enough to expose his father’s fabricated evidence in court, but the boy finally did.
Daniel says the deeper cause was the father’s parenting.
Lee Sechang repeatedly taught his son that admitting fault meant losing. That mindset gradually drilled dishonesty and blame-shifting into him.
Daniel says Hanrim handled the family remarkably well.
She asks how he could read the father’s behavior so precisely.
Daniel says he could see the psychology by watching him:
- shamelessness;
- denial of guilt;
- and the instinct to solve every problem by blaming someone else.
Sechang eventually became a victim of the same mindset he encouraged in his son.
Hanrim says Sera is also exceptionally good at understanding troubled students.
Sera attended a “problem school” herself and therefore reads certain children through direct experience.
Daniel says he sometimes does the same thing, making assumptions from what he personally survived.
He tells Hanrim that, in contrast, she often seems able to read human nature itself rather than only comparing a student with her own past.
He calls the insight almost uncanny.
Strip 004 — Hanrim asks about Daniel’s hidden history¶
Daniel says Hanrim has a rare ability to recognize evil and manipulation.
She replies that he is younger than she is, yet speaks as though he has met far more dangerous people.
Daniel says he had plenty of opportunities to encounter evil while growing up.
Hanrim becomes curious.
The résumé attached to Daniel’s recruitment file contained only basic details such as birthplace, a short self-introduction, and his American background.
It did not list a conventional education, family history, or detailed career path.
WHAT KIND OF LIFE HAVE YOU LIVED UNTIL NOW?
Daniel begins to answer.
Before he can continue, a restaurant worker announces that the business is closing for the night.
A masked man has been sitting nearby, silently watching Daniel.
Daniel and Hanrim leave.
Hanrim takes the bus home, embarrassed that she spent the evening talking about herself and Sera, then forgot to listen to the important part of Daniel’s story.
Daniel remains behind in the neighborhood.
He thinks that they work together now and that Hanrim will probably hear the truth eventually.
The masked observer follows him.
Strip 005 — Daniel remembers becoming homeless¶
Daniel’s memories return to childhood.
After a violent incident involving his father, a body lies in blood.
Daniel is left with the reputation of being the child who shot or killed his own father, though the exact circumstances remain incomplete in this chapter.
Soon afterward, his mother abandons him and disappears.
Daniel assumes she wanted to escape both the “monster” his father represented and the child connected to the shooting.
He is left alone in a small, empty residence.
He says he was too young to understand what to do.
In retrospect, he should have told a school, the police, or another adult.
Instead, he drifts into homelessness.
He sleeps outside, searches rubbish for food, and eats a discarded hamburger from the ground.
A shadow falls across him.
An adult recognizes him immediately.

Daniel realizes with one glance that this man is profoundly dangerous.
Strip 006 — A criminal recruits the abandoned child¶
The stranger says Daniel has rare natural talent, even by the standards of the violent slum in which they are standing.
He offers to take Daniel with him and teach him how to survive.
Daniel understands that the man is evil—possibly more dangerous than anyone else he has met.
He also understands that he has no meaningful alternative.
BUT I HAD NO CHOICE.
I HAD TO SURVIVE, EVEN IF IT MEANT LIVING LIKE THAT.
The memory fades.
In the present, Daniel enters his apartment building and notices the masked man moving behind him.
The stranger rushes forward with a blade.
Daniel turns before the attack lands.
Strip 007 — The attacker knows Daniel’s old identity¶
Daniel blocks the knife, traps the attacker’s arm, and drives him into the wall.
The masked man is exceptionally skilled and continues attacking with close-range slashes.
Daniel asks whether Park Heunam sent him.
The attacker confirms that he was hired through the school-bullying perpetrators’ father, but says the official investigation described Heunam as only a low-level gangster.
What confuses him is Heunam’s willingness to target Daniel.
The attacker says Daniel is not an ordinary government official.
He calls him a “young noble”—the heir connected to a powerful American criminal family.
In a country where firearms are difficult to obtain, even a small gang attacking such a person risks total annihilation.
The attacker demands Daniel’s identity or codename.
He wonders whether the polite civil servant appearance is only a disguise worn by a former mob figure.
Strip 008 — “Hyun Daniel, the Young Noble”¶
The masked man identifies him:
HYUN DANIEL, THE YOUNG NOBLE.
A shadowed image shows a younger Daniel holding a gun.
The recognition visibly disturbs the adult Daniel.
The attacker produces and flicks several blades in quick succession.
Daniel avoids them and drives forward.
He grabs the man by the clothing and asks:
WHO ARE YOU?
The chapter ends with the two men face-to-face, implying that the attacker is connected not only to Park Heunam’s contract but to Daniel’s former life in America.
