Strip 001 — Park Heunam’s hitman identifies Daniel¶
Before the apartment fight, Park Heunam had introduced the masked man to associates as a dangerous professional.
Someone asked how the “psychopath” could attack a government official without creating a disaster.
The masked man answered that none of those concerns mattered.
What mattered was that the target appeared to be the “young noble.”
In the present, he restrains Daniel with a knife at his throat and demands an answer.
He says a minor Korean organization could be annihilated if it carelessly touched the heir of a major New York criminal family.
The attacker asks how Daniel acquired a Korean name and official identity.
He says he will give Daniel three seconds to answer.
Strip 002 — The attacker is Daniel’s former partner¶
An elderly resident opens her door after hearing the struggle and demands that the two young men stop making noise.
Daniel and the attacker instantly move out of sight, leaving the hallway apparently empty.
Once the woman closes her door, the fight resumes.
Daniel finally says the man’s name:
DAVID HAN?
The masked attacker removes enough of the disguise to reveal himself.
David says:
LONG TIME NO SEE, PARTNER.
The two fought together roughly ten years earlier.
David complains that Daniel nearly killed him over what he considered a simple prank or test.
Daniel notes that David’s skills have not rusted.
David says his old partner still moves equally well.
They enter Daniel’s apartment.
David looks around at the nearly empty rooms and says the place has not changed at all.
Daniel tells him to take off his shoes because he is in Korea.
David answers:
OOPS!
Strip 003 — Daniel’s apartment and the American family¶
The apartment contains almost no decoration or evidence of a settled personal life.
David jokes that Daniel still keeps an empty house.
Daniel offers instant noodles.
David tries the extremely spicy Korean variety and nearly breathes fire.
Daniel says nearly everyone in Korea treats the noodles as a normal comfort food.
David asks how a country obsessed with such food can possess so little ordinary gang power.
Daniel says Korea’s public safety is comparatively strong.
David replies that their American “family” was different.
The organization Daniel fled was the type to hunt its own members across countries.
He asks whether the family’s “top monster” might travel all the way to Korea to drag back a runaway heir.
Daniel asks whether David received such an order.
Strip 004 — The mafia family was destroyed¶
David says the family is finished.
The “big boss” attempted to expand the organization through politics by supporting or controlling a candidate in a mayoral election.
Once the candidate won, he tried to cut ties with the criminal organization.
The family retaliated or conspired against him.
Federal authorities classified the organization as a terrorist-level threat.
Special forces raided it.
The group was effectively annihilated.
Daniel survived only because he was away on another mission.
He says that, for the first time in his life, he may now be doing something genuinely worthwhile through the TRPA.
David thanks him for the food and prepares to leave despite barely eating the noodles.
Strip 005 — David chooses Korea and gives Daniel his mother’s address¶
Outside, Daniel asks where David will go.
David says he intends to return to the United States because no organization remains there to hunt him.
Daniel notices something unfamiliar.
In the roughly ten years they have known one another, this is the first time he has seen David smile naturally.
David always wanted to leave the criminal family and go to his mother’s home country.
He is surprised by the scale of what he is attempting but says it feels possible.
Daniel asks again whether David helped cause the family’s destruction.
David gives an evasive answer and calls the issue pointless now.
Then he hands Daniel a Korean resident-registration document.
David says he arranged it through an occasional side job and obtained the address of Daniel’s mother.
The document indicates that she returned to Korea after everything happened.
Her location is in Busan.
Strip 006 — Daniel once saved David¶
A flashback shows younger Daniel and David in suits.
Daniel tells David:
GO WHEREVER YOU WANT.
He promises to report to the boss that David died.
Daniel says he is repaying a favor.
The action allowed David to escape the family.
In the present, David says he will see Daniel again in the United States and walks away.
Daniel studies his mother’s document and Busan address.
The chapter cuts to Busan at night.
Two debt collectors surround a young woman.
They demand overdue interest and mock her for asking for a few more days.
The debt is connected to a predatory payment or loan arrangement.
Strip 007 — The collectors threaten sexual exploitation¶
The men say they need collateral if she cannot pay.
They remind her that she previously agreed to provide something of value.
They begin discussing her body and the money they could obtain from forcing her into sexualized work or photographs.
The woman suddenly changes her posture.
She tells them she has repaid the principal and suggests they should forget the remaining money.
The collectors laugh.
She knees one man between the legs and drives the other down.
The “helpless debtor” persona was an act.
She has used the situation to gather information about how the collectors contact their superiors.
Strip 008 — Sera’s Busan assignment begins¶
The woman pushes her wet hair aside and grins.
Her glasses and styling disguise Gu Sera.
She thinks:
AH, I ALWAYS WANTED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS…
IF I JUST DON’T PAY BACK LOAN SHARKS AND KEEP ACTING LIKE A BRAT…
A caption confirms:
GU SERA, CURRENTLY ON AN ASSIGNMENT IN BUSAN!
The chapter ends by connecting Daniel’s personal Busan lead with the TRPA’s investigation of G.Y.’s regional loan-sharking branch.
