Strips 001–002 — Daniel begins disciplining Jinyoung¶
Daniel Hyun enters Myeonjeong Elementary School under the alias:
KIM HYEON
He becomes Jinyoung’s new homeroom teacher.
On only his third day, Jinyoung repeatedly runs through the hallway after being warned three times.
Daniel does not hit him.
He imposes a precise consequence:
FROM NOW ON, WHENEVER YOU’RE IN THE HALLWAY, YOU ARE TO WALK ON YOUR TIPTOES.
Other children laugh because the punishment makes reckless running impossible without creating a spectacle.
Jinyoung’s mother immediately confronts Daniel.
She says he physically handled her son and humiliated him in a hallway full of students.
Daniel calmly explains the three warnings and calls the response legitimate discipline.
Strip 003 — Daniel refuses her rhetorical trap¶
The mother asks:
TEACHER, HOW OLD IS MY JINYOUNG?
Daniel recognizes the question as a tactic rather than a request for information.
Both adults know the child’s age.
She expects Daniel to answer “ten” or “eleven” so she can lecture him about humiliating a child during a sensitive stage of emotional development.
Daniel refuses to participate.
WITH AN OBVIOUS ANSWER, YOU ASK A QUESTION JUST TO FORCE ME INTO A CORNER, THEN USE THAT OPENING TO LECTURE ME.
IT’S A TRANSPARENT TACTIC.
The mother is furious that the new teacher does not apologize or retreat.
Daniel ends the meeting by saying he does not expect they will need to meet again.
Strip 004 — One week later, another police call¶
One week later, a detective from the Women and Juvenile Division calls Daniel.
A child-abuse report has been filed.
The officer asks Daniel to appear for fact verification.
Daniel has just finished school and agrees to come immediately.
At the station, the detective admits that the situation appears deeply unfair.
He advises Daniel to apologize and beg for withdrawal because that is often the fastest way to escape the process.
The detective also knows that Han Sunyeong is not the type to accept an apology.
Daniel asks why police continue processing such reports when the same complainant has already filed repeatedly.
Strip 005 — Police know the pattern but cannot refuse¶
The detective says Han Sunyeong has filed approximately seven child-abuse reports against teachers.
Only four have concluded:
- one ended in a suspended or deferred indictment;
- the others ended without charges.
Police understand that the reports may be malicious.
Their manual still requires unconditional processing of sensitive child-abuse allegations.
Proving a knowingly false report is difficult because the parent can always say she genuinely perceived the teacher’s conduct as abuse.
Police therefore request opinions from child-specialized agencies.
Those agencies are experts in abuse inside families.
When the same standards are transferred into schools, ordinary discipline may be classified as emotional harm.
The detective calls it the reality of the country.
Daniel says the system is difficult to imagine from the United States, where he grew up.
Strip 006 — Han Sunyeong is also an abusive professor¶
The chapter reveals Han Sunyeong’s professional life.
She is a modern-art professor supervising a graduate student named Dahee.
Sunyeong asks Dahee how long she has been in the master’s program and reminds her that graduation depends on the professor’s approval.
She then presents a birthday gift intended for her eleven-year-old son.
The store wrapped it with a red ribbon.
Sunyeong demands to know whether such wrapping is suitable for a boy entering adolescence.
When Dahee explains that she accepted the store’s wrapping, Sunyeong threatens her degree.
DO I REALLY NEED TO LET SOMEONE LIKE YOU GRADUATE?
Dahee apologizes and offers to rewrap it.
Sunyeong says the damage to her mood will last until the next day and orders Dahee to clean the laboratory thoroughly.
The professor who calls mild school discipline emotional cruelty openly uses a student’s graduation as leverage for unpaid personal labor.
Strip 007 — She finds Jinyoung cleaning alone¶
After waiting outside school, Sunyeong realizes most fifth graders have already left.
She assumes Jinyoung went somewhere with friends while making her wait.
Inside the building she discovers him cleaning the classroom alone.
She erupts at Daniel.
WHY ARE YOU LETTING MY SON CLEAN ALL BY HIMSELF AFTER SCHOOL?!
More importantly, she asks why Daniel is still the homeroom teacher.
She expected her child-abuse report to remove him immediately.
Daniel says he will answer in order.
Jinyoung disrupted class at least five times.
The chalkboard records his behavior.
The cleaning is legitimate discipline intended to teach order.
Strip 008 — The law no longer removes a teacher automatically¶
Daniel explains that a child-abuse report no longer causes automatic removal or immediate separation from a teacher.
That had been common in the past.
Because some parents abused the reporting system, the Teacher Rights Protection Act was revised two years earlier.
Until legitimate grounds for the claim are established, the teacher is not stripped of the class merely because someone filed a report.
Daniel says the previous teachers chose leave or transfer because they were intimidated.
He will not.
I HAVE NO INTENTION OF LEAVING THIS CLASSROOM OF MY OWN VOLITION.
Strip 009 — Sunyeong boasts that earlier protections failed¶
Sunyeong assumes a teachers’ organization sent Daniel.
She remembers that when an earlier homeroom teacher changed, a professional teachers’ group threatened:
- a false-accusation lawsuit;
- media exposure;
- a Teachers’ Rights Protection Committee;
- and mandatory special education.
She ignored every demand.
No one forced her to attend the education or imposed an effective punishment.
She tells Daniel not to misunderstand.
NO MATTER WHAT YOU DO, DO YOU THINK I’LL GIVE UP THE RIGHTS OF A “LEGITIMATE” PARENT?
She promises to bury him.
Daniel turns back to Jinyoung.
The discipline is not over.
Cleaning alone is insufficient.
Jinyoung must repeat his promise not to run in the hallway.
Strips 010–012 — Emotional-abuse rhetoric gives way to visible violence¶
Sunyeong refuses to let her son remain even a few minutes longer on his birthday.
Daniel says the atmosphere will continue until Jinyoung finishes the consequence and repeats the rule three times.
The mother loses control.
She physically attacks Daniel in front of the child.
His glasses strike the floor.
He is left bruised but remains standing.
The closing narration contrasts the two allegations.
Her claim of emotional child abuse depends on a subjective interpretation of legitimate discipline.
Her own conduct is visible, direct physical violence against a teacher in front of a child.
