The guidance feels almost absurd to a man who has never practiced ordinary care.
A flashback shows that Yunseong’s birth was not planned.

He became the household’s nominal provider without developing the habits required to support a family.
Strip 002 — The household deteriorates¶
The mother works, cleans, and responds to the baby while the father remains unemployed or inactive.
Yunseong cries.
The mother asks the father to help.
He reacts as though childcare is an unfair demand.
The relationship deteriorates through exhaustion, resentment, and violence.
The father eventually prepares eggs or a simple meal.
The gesture is small, but it makes him wonder what being a parent was supposed to mean before the household became hostile.
The chapter then returns to the school-age Yunseong, for whom such care arrived far too rarely.
Strip 003 — One breakfast cannot repair years¶
The father makes breakfast for Yunseong.
It is the first deliberate meal he has prepared for the child in a long time.
Yunseong reacts suspiciously.
He did not ask for the food and believes the sudden kindness must hide another motive.
The father becomes frustrated because the book promised that a small affectionate act would open the child’s heart.

The father invites Yunseong to take a walk.

Strip 004 — Another offense begins¶
The father follows Yunseong and attempts to stop him from smoking.
Yunseong receives an online message connected to expensive shoes or valuable merchandise.
Shortly afterward, police call.
Yunseong has robbed another unmanned store.
This time, the offense is more serious.
The store owner says the boy attacked or pinned him while carrying a weapon.
Yunseong had planned to frame the confrontation as self-defense and then demand settlement money.
The child is no longer stealing only for food.
Crime has become calculation, status, and income.
Strip 005 — The father bows to the victim¶
The owner prepares to turn Yunseong over to police.
The father steps between them.
He does not threaten a counterclaim.
He bows.
He apologizes and says he will discipline his son personally.
The gesture is the first moment in the arc when the father accepts another person’s harm without immediately blaming the victim.
Walking home, he asks when and how Yunseong became so distorted.
The question is partly sincere and partly evasive.
He was present during the years when the distortion occurred.
Strip 006 — Na recognizes the first change¶
Yunseong is furious that his father begged.
He says the situation could have produced money if the father had followed the self-defense and settlement plan.
The father kneels or lowers himself and asks what he can do.
He suspects that threats or pressure from outside may be influencing the child.
Na says the father is more perceptive than he appears.
He hands him an envelope.
The inspector is beginning to test whether the parent can be motivated by something other than fear.
Strip 007 — A birthday present¶
Na explains that the envelope contains settlement money and a reward connected to the father’s cooperation.
He notes that Yunseong’s birthday is three days away.
The father purchases a pair of shoes and leaves them as a birthday gift.
He includes a written note inviting Yunseong to wear them when they go out for a meal together and offering to exchange them if the size is wrong.
The father then drinks and falls asleep.
The gesture remains clumsy and late, but it is personal.
Yunseong notices both the approaching birthday and the fact that his juvenile-protection status will soon change.
He begins planning one last serious act before the legal boundary expires.
Strip 008 — The bat and the note¶
Yunseong grips a baseball bat.
He approaches his sleeping father.
He thinks about beating the man to death before he loses the protection attached to his age.
Then he sees the shoes and reads the note.
The child freezes.
The gift does not erase years of hunger, beatings, and abandonment.
It introduces an unfamiliar contradiction: the person he intends to kill has, perhaps for the first time, considered what he might like.
The chapter ends with the bat still in Yunseong’s hand and the decision unresolved.
