Opening — Two teachers remain¶
The chapter opens during the final day of Na’s teacher “midterm examination.”
A student offers Choi Hyun-woong a hamburger while he works, awkwardly noting that he probably does not usually eat food like this. The gesture shows that the reversal of authority has not destroyed every possibility of empathy.
Na observes that only two faculty members have not passed:
- Lee Yoo-yong
- Cheon Sang-yeol
The deadline is the following morning.
Cheon appears exhausted and increasingly desperate.
Cheon’s daughter calls¶
Cheon receives a video call from his young daughter.
His face softens immediately.
“AIGOO~ HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN, MY PRINCESS?”
The girl excitedly describes a friend’s birthday party and an upcoming camping trip.
She says her mother told her the trip will cost money.
The requested amount is approximately two thousand dollars.
“CAN YOU SEND THE MONEY BY TOMORROW?”
Cheon knows that his former wife puts the child first and that his financial support helps preserve the daughter’s comfortable life.
He promises:
“OF COURSE~! I’LL MAKE SURE TO SEND IT TOMORROW.”
The call explains why losing his job terrifies him, but the chapter does not allow that fear to erase what he did.
The victim refuses a deal¶
Cheon approaches a former student.
He assumes that the boy’s difficult childhood made him ambitious and practical. Cheon says that hardship became the driving force of his own life and offers a deal instead of an apology.
He gives the student the questions for the upcoming midterm examination.
He also offers:
“ALL THE SCHOOL’S RECORDS AND STUDENTS’ RECORDS…”
“I’LL TAKE CARE OF ALL YOUR SCHOOL RECORDS UNTIL YOU GRADUATE.”
He calls the student smart and implies that manipulated records are worth more than “useless emotions.”
The boy looks at the papers, then answers:
“YOU’RE A TEACHER…”
“THANKS TO YOU, I HAVE LEARNED SOMETHING FOR SURE.”
“THAT I SHOULD NEVER BE LIKE YOU…”
The attempted bribe proves that Cheon still sees education as a market.
Violence erupts¶
The student attacks Cheon.
He demands to know what he ever did to deserve such a grudge.
The answer is that Cheon’s actions destroyed more than one examination result. His corruption changed lives, taught students that merit was meaningless, and helped push a victim toward crime.
Cheon declares that the bureau may “stab” him if it wants. He says he has nothing left to lose, then immediately admits the contradiction:
“BUT I WON’T BE ABLE TO TAKE CARE OF MY FAMILY…”
He begs for his daughter’s sake.
Na stops the victim from spending more of his remaining examination time on the teacher.
Cheon’s score for the attempt is:
“ZERO POINTS!”
Na tells the student to go study and says he will handle the teacher.
Cheon begs for his job¶
Cheon falls to his knees.
“PLEASE…”
“FIRE ME AND LET ME GO.”
“I HAVE AN 8 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER!”
He asks for mercy for his family.
Na answers that the victim’s suffering does not disappear because the perpetrator has dependents.
“WHAT ABOUT MY JOB… WHAT ABOUT MY FAMILY…”
Na identifies the logic:
“THAT’S YOUR SITUATION AFTER ALL, ISN’T IT?”
“IF YOU WANT TO BE FORGIVEN, YOU WILL HAVE TO TAKE RESPONSIBILITY FOR YOUR OWN WRONGDOINGS.”
He asks why Cheon keeps talking about the perpetrator when forgiveness is supposed to address the victim.
“AFTER ALL, THAT LOGIC ISN’T FOR THE VICTIM.”
The implied meaning of Cheon’s apology is exposed:
“FORGIVE ME FOR WHO I AM.”
Na admits that taking away a breadwinner’s job does not feel pleasant, even when it is necessary.
He then offers one final chance.
The final task — Han Yeri¶
Na shows Cheon the image of a girl.
“DO YOU REMEMBER THIS KID?”
The girl had once been an honor student.
Because of Cheon’s “excellent education,” she suffered a psychological collapse and became a criminal.
Cheon recognizes her.
The final panel gives her name:
“HAN YERI.”
The chapter ends by revealing that the teacher’s corruption did not merely lower scores. It helped create the conditions that destroyed a student’s judgment and life.
Chapter-level observations¶
1. Cheon tries to solve morality with the same tool that caused the harm¶
He offers leaked questions and altered records because he still believes every student can be purchased through academic advantage.
2. Family explains his fear but does not excuse him¶
The daughter is portrayed affectionately. The chapter deliberately gives Cheon something real to lose, then insists that responsibility still belongs to him.
3. Na separates punishment from revenge¶
He prevents the victim from wasting his future on an extended assault and keeps the final decision focused on accountability.
4. Han Yeri is the consequence Cheon avoided seeing¶
The final task requires him to face a student whose entire moral direction was distorted by the corruption he normalized.
