Opening — Han Yeri meets Cheon Sang-yeol¶
Cheon Sang-yeol is brought before Han Yeri.
He begins nervously:
“IT’S… IT’S BEEN A LONG TIME.”
Before he can complete the greeting, Yeri attacks him.
Cheon screams and begs:
“I’M… I’M SORRY, PLEASE!”
Yeri asks whether he truly expects forgiveness after what he did.
Na and Lim intervene before the confrontation becomes murder.
Lim tells Yeri that this is enough.
Yeri asks to go home because she has midterms the following day. The ordinary school concern clashes sharply with the violence and reminds the reader that she is still a young person trying to return to education.
Flashback — Yeri’s school life¶
The chapter reconstructs what happened to her.
Yeri was ordered to perform humiliating cleaning and service tasks. A teacher threatened to return in an hour and warned that even a speck of dust would bring consequences.
Female students surrounded her and treated her appearance as another target.
A girl announced:
“WELCOME~ THIS IS MIMI’S BEAUTY SALON~”
They forcibly cut Yeri’s hair.
When another adult later saw the result, the abuse was dismissed as tidiness:
“AH~ DID YOU GET A HAIRCUT?”
“IT’S NICE TO SEE YOU NEAT AND TIDY.”
Her performance-assessment score was reduced under labels such as:
“AIDING AND ALLOWING BULLYING.”
The system punished the victim while preserving the fiction that the school was measuring conduct fairly.
A homeroom teacher tried to comfort her after an academic rejection, saying that university was not everything and that her life was not over.
Yeri thanked the teacher, but the words could not explain why students with lower grades had received better opportunities.
The bribe becomes obvious¶
Twins who had lower grade-point averages than Yeri were accepted into a prestigious foreign high school.
They thanked the homeroom teacher and delivered a gift from their mother.
Afterward, the girls mocked Yeri and celebrated that she had failed.
Yeri finally understood.
“I KNEW IT!”
“THOSE BITCHES OFFERED MONEY TO RAISE THEIR GRADES!”
She concluded that teachers could not be trusted.
“I WILL NEVER BE SWAYED BY A TEACHER AGAIN.”
“I’M GOING TO MAKE IT THAT YOU WON’T TOUCH ME EVER AGAIN!”
Her decision to protect herself hardened into an absolute rejection of authority.
Yeri’s crime and anger¶
Back in the present, Yeri blames Cheon:
“IT’S ALL BECAUSE OF YOU!”
“MY LIFE IS RUINED!”
She attempts another attack.
Lim stops her and uses harsh humor, warning that murder will only earn her prison food and complete the destruction of her life.
Yeri screams that her life is already ruined and that she is already an ex-convict.
Lim answers:
“IT DOESN’T MATTER IF YOU’RE AN EX-CONVICT OR NOT.”
“WHAT MATTERS IS THAT THERE’S STILL LIGHT IN YOUR HEART.”
She then names the moral fact Yeri has tried to avoid:
“BECAUSE OF YOU, TEACHER KO YEONG-SOO DIED.”
Yeri’s suffering at Cheon’s hands was real, but it does not erase the teacher and family harmed by her false accusation.
Lim says Ko Yeong-soo’s family is suffering hundreds or thousands of times more than Cheon’s present fear.
“YOU’RE JUST A PERSON WHO HAS KILLED SOMEONE BEFORE, WHETHER OR NOT YOU HAVE A CRIMINAL RECORD.”
If Yeri wants to begin again, she must ask the bereaved family for forgiveness with all her strength.
The corruption becomes public¶
A news report announces the urgent arrest of a teacher from Chukmyeong High School.
The report states that the teacher:
- received bribes from parents,
- leaked midterm questions,
- manipulated student records,
- discriminated in performance evaluations,
- deliberately lowered the grades of students from poor family environments.
The investigation was conducted under the supervision of the Bureau of Education and the Teachers’ Rights Protection Agency.
The report also reveals that H, a juvenile offender involved in the false accusation and death of a teacher, had been one of the corruption victim’s students.
The media does not use Cheon’s wrongdoing to erase Yeri’s crime. It explains the chain that helped produce it.
Yeri’s letters¶
Yeri is now shown writing letters to Ko Yeong-soo’s bereaved family every day.
The visible pages repeat the same central request:
“DON’T FORGIVE ME.”
She does not demand a settlement or use remorse to ask for release.
The news presenter says that the final phrase of the letter is heartbreaking.
The case is described as one in which a wrong teacher and twisted education ruined a student’s life.
Na and Lim discuss the outcome.
Lim says she never imagined that Han Yeri would genuinely regret what she did.
Na invokes the idea that a person may be enlightened by negative or painful examples rather than only good ones.
He calls the result:
“TRUE EDUCATION.”
Chapter-level observations¶
1. The chapter keeps two wrongs visible at once¶
Cheon’s corruption victimized Yeri. Yeri still bears responsibility for the false accusation that led to Ko Yeong-soo’s death.
2. Institutional injustice became personal nihilism¶
When Yeri learned that records could be bought, she stopped believing that legitimate authority existed. That belief did not excuse her crime, but it explains the route toward it.
3. Remorse is not performed for reward¶
The repeated phrase “Don’t forgive me” matters because Yeri is not using apology as a transaction.
4. Public explanation is different from exoneration¶
The investigation reveals the cause without rewriting Yeri as innocent.
