Opening — Knife threat¶
The chapter resumes with a delinquent holding a blade toward Na.
The boy asks whether Na has ever killed someone.
He says he can stab without hesitation and warns:
“IF YOU DON’T WANT TO DIE, THEN LEAVE OUR SCHOOL AND GET LOST.”
Na answers that the threat sounds as though the boy has already killed someone.
The student attacks.
Na disarms and drops him almost immediately.
He warns the entire group:
“DON’T EVER TOUCH THE AUTHORITIES!”
Lim reports that Ho Song-cha will arrive in five minutes.
Na announces that Min Ji-woong and four others are under arrest for theft and attempted murder.
Blindfolded transport¶
The children are transported for hours with their eyes covered.
They repeatedly ask where they are going.
At one point Lim says that the girls are dropped off at another location.
The boys realize that the group is being separated.
They are ordered out of the vehicle and told to move quickly.
When the blindfolds are removed, they are inside a locked institutional building.
Older detainees immediately gather around them.
“NEWCOMERS AGAIN?!”
“HOW OLD ARE YOU FUCKERS? THEY’RE FUCKING YOUNG!”
The middle-school students attempt to preserve bravado, but their bodies stiffen.
Intake¶
The newcomers are lined up and told:
“ONE BY ONE, SAY THE CRIMES YOU HAVE COMMITTED.”
One admits that the group robbed a car and a store.
Another calls the entire setting a show.
He assumes they have been brought to a fake prison before trial merely to scare them.
He says he only beat a few students at school.
When a newcomer in the middle fails to answer quickly, an older inmate moves toward him.
The room’s social rules are immediately physical.
The room leader¶
The older inmate says he once buried a man outside and may bury another inside.
He orders the boy to lower his eyes and threatens to make him dig a grave with a spoon.
The children insist that they are not ordinary prisoners.
The response is that this distinction does not protect them here.
A youth resists verbally and is beaten.
The delinquents had expected an argument staged by adults. They realize the people in front of them are not following a script.
Ma Kyeom¶
One of the newcomers recognizes the room leader from the news.
A year earlier, the young man was convicted after killing seven people.
He laughed during the case and said he had done nothing wrong.
A caption identifies him:
“MA KYEOM (19)”
“CRIME: MURDERED 7 PEOPLE”
“SENTENCE: 20 YEARS”
The scanlation describes twenty years as the maximum sentence available under the applicable juvenile law.
Ma Kyeom tells them that discipline inside juvenile prison is severe.
If they cause trouble, their sentences may increase.
His own sentence, however, is already at the maximum.
“EVEN IF I KILL ALL OF YOU, MY SENTENCE WILL REMAIN THE SAME.”
The chapter ends on the boys realizing that the legal shield they bragged about outside has no value against someone with nothing left to lose.
Chapter-level observations¶
1. The agency turns legal abstraction into environment¶
The children know disposition numbers and age thresholds, but they have never imagined the daily power structure inside confinement.
2. Ma Kyeom is the endpoint of their worldview¶
He embodies the logic of total immunity taken to its extreme: if punishment cannot increase, violence appears costless.
3. The children lose adult protection¶
Outside, adults must restrain themselves around minors. Inside, the most dangerous people around them are also legally classified as youths.
4. The girls’ separate destination foreshadows a parallel intervention¶
The brief line about dropping the girls elsewhere indicates that the lesson is being adapted by gender and facility rather than abandoning them.
