Strip 001 — Cover and credits¶
The Imperfect Comics title card identifies Chapter 40. Na Hwa-jin appears in the standard dark portrait on the right.
Strip 002 — Warning¶
A black content warning precedes the basketball match begun at the end of Chapter 39.
Strip 003 — Terms of the one-on-one¶
Park Eun-ha and Kang Soo-yeon face each other on the gym floor in yellow-and-blue uniforms. Teammates gather behind the sideline.
Lim Han-rim raises one hand and announces:
“WHOEVER SCORES 5 POINTS FIRST WINS.”
Soo-yeon looks toward Lim.
“KEEP YOUR PROMISE.”
“IF I WIN, ARE YOU GOING TO GO BACK TO THE EDUCATION DEPARTMENT?”
Lim’s open-handed posture indicates she accepts the condition. The game is therefore not merely practice: Soo-yeon believes victory will remove Lim from the team.
Strip 004 — Soo-yeon’s confidence¶
The game begins. Soo-yeon drives aggressively, using her height, power, and national-team experience.
Her internal thought dismisses Eun-ha:
“THIS IS GREAT. THIS BITCH WHO CAN’T EVEN PRACTICE WELL”
“THERE’S NO WAY I’M GOING TO LOSE!”
Eun-ha stays low, tracks the ball, and refuses to retreat.
Strip 005 — Four to four¶
A shot drops cleanly through the hoop.
Spectators shout:
“NO WAY…”
“PARK EUN-HA REALLY DID IT?!”
The score is tied:
“IT’S 4 TO 4!”
“MATCHPOINT?!”
Soo-yeon wipes sweat from her face. Her earlier confidence has turned into panic. One more basket will decide whether she is publicly beaten by the teammate she treated as inferior.
Strip 006 — Flashback: two years earlier¶
The chapter abruptly cuts to:
“2 YEARS AGO”
At a national basketball championship, a younger Park Eun-ha plays against a stronger school. She is tall but raw, forcing shots through traffic and fighting for possession.
A defender blocks or collides with her. Eun-ha falls, breathing hard, but remains focused on the game.
Strip 007 — A scout notices her¶
A coach or evaluator watches from the sideline.
“WOAH~ SHE’S GOOD.”
“WAS THERE A GIRL LIKE THAT?”
The observing Soo-yeon hears the praise. Her eyes move from the court to the evaluator, registering the attention Eun-ha is receiving.
Strip 008 — “A scary talent”¶
The evaluator tells Soo-yeon:
“I’M SORRY TO SAY THIS TO YOU, SOO-YEON BUT…”
“SHE’S A LITTLE BIT MORE THAN YOUR LITTLE SISTER? I THINK SHE’S BETTER…”
He calls Eun-ha:
“A SCARY TALENT!”
The comparison is especially threatening because Ja-yeon had been marketed as Soo-yeon’s natural partner and heir.
Strip 009 — Rapid growth¶
The evaluator recalls facing Eun-ha the previous year:
“WHEN I WENT UP AGAINST HER LAST YEAR…”
“SHE WAS JUST A TALL BEGINNER…”
“IN JUST A YEAR”
“HER SKILLS AND TECHNIQUE HAVE GROWN BEYOND RECOGNITION.”
He predicts:
“WHEN PARK EUN-HA COMES TO HIGH SCHOOL”
“SHE MIGHT BE A PLAYER THAT WILL HOLD ME BACK.”
Soo-yeon’s eyes narrow as she realizes Eun-ha’s potential is not theoretical.
Strip 010 — The decision to keep Eun-ha close¶
The evaluator tells the coach:
“LET’S SCOUT HER.”
Soo-yeon thinks:
“I’D RATHER KEEP HER NEXT TO ME!”
“RATHER THAN HER GOING TO ANOTHER SCHOOL AND BECOMING MY RIVAL…”
The thought reframes Eun-ha’s recruitment. Soo-yeon did not merely want a talented teammate; she wanted surveillance and control over a future rival.
A final basket falls through a hoop, linking the flashback to the present match.
Strip 011 — The coach celebrates; Soo-yeon becomes afraid¶
The coach beams at Eun-ha’s development.
“WOAH~ PARK EUN-HA! YOU’VE IMPROVED IN NO TIME!”
“I WAS GOING TO RAISE HER NEXT YEAR BUT I DON’T NEED TO NOW! SHE’S ALREADY A KEY PLAYER!”
“KANG SOO-YEON, KANG JA-YEON, PARK EUN-HA TRIO! LET’S REALLY WIN THE NATIONAL SPORTS FESTIVAL THIS YEAR!”
Soo-yeon smiles outwardly, but her internal narration is stark:
“LOOKING AT IT MAKES MY ANXIETY INCREASE.”
“SHE’S NOT JUST SIMPLY A HIGH SCHOOL ACE, PARK EUN-HA IS DEFINITELY A PROFESSIONAL.”
“SIMILAR AGE… SAME HIGH SCHOOL…”
The chapter ends before the final point of the present-day match. Its real revelation is that Soo-yeon’s bullying began as an attempt to contain a teammate she feared would surpass her.
Chapter-level observations¶
1. The game forces objective comparison¶
Soo-yeon’s status had allowed her to define Eun-ha as weak. A first-to-five game removes the hierarchy and tests only skill.
2. Recruitment became captivity¶
Soo-yeon’s wish to keep Eun-ha “next to” her was not admiration. It was a strategy to prevent Eun-ha from developing elsewhere as a rival.
3. The 4–4 score destabilizes Soo-yeon’s identity¶
She is a national-team player and public “basketball queen.” Being taken to match point by Eun-ha proves that the threat she imagined two years earlier has become real.
4. The chapter delays the result to expose motive¶
Rather than end with a winning shot, the chapter stops inside Soo-yeon’s memory. The decisive issue is no longer who scores next, but why Soo-yeon spent years crushing Eun-ha’s confidence.
