Content note¶
The chapter discusses ideological coercion in a classroom, sex and gender discrimination, coordinated online pressure, ostracism of children, and a teacher realizing that she manipulated her students.
Images 001–004 — A teacher who believes she is building equality¶
The chapter opens inside an elementary classroom.
Teacher Sanghui Yang describes the study group she created for students interested in social issues.
She says the original goal was to encourage critical thinking.
WHEN SOMEONE OFFERS A DIFFERENT OPINION…
students should discuss the disagreement rather than attack one another.
The teacher remembers herself as deeply committed to education and to creating a society without discrimination.
She does not yet understand why the class has become divided and hostile.
Images 005–011 — The online community shapes her curriculum¶
Sanghui recalls conversations with other adults about discrimination.
She is introduced to an online community populated by women who describe themselves as experienced seniors.
The site offers:
- reading lists;
- discussion rooms;
- model lesson plans;
- and advice about correcting supposedly sexist language.
Sanghui signs up.
She believes the members share her desire for equality.
The more time she spends in the community, the more she treats its worldview as the only morally acceptable position.
She tells herself:
I’M DOING THE RIGHT THING.
Recognition from senior members and praise from colleagues make her increasingly certain.
Images 012–020 — Na challenges the method, not the value¶
Na Hwa-jin confronts Sanghui in front of the class.
She accuses him of rejecting gender equality.
Na says he is not denying the importance of equal rights.
He is questioning the method she used to teach it.
Sanghui has not merely presented ideas.
She has divided children into morally superior and inferior groups based on whether they repeat her position.
Students who disagree are labeled ignorant or discriminatory.
Other classmates are encouraged to confront and mock them.
DO YOU WISH TO CREATE A SOCIETY…
Na asks whether her goal is a country where everyone is permanently sorted into supporters and enemies.
Sanghui becomes frightened because she recognizes parts of her classroom in his description.
Images 021–028 — Somi is asked to speak honestly¶
Na turns to a student named Somi.
He says the class has heard what the teacher believes.
Now it should hear what a student actually experienced.
Somi stands at the front holding a written statement.
Her presentation summarizes the principles Sanghui taught, including:
- women should never be judged as weak simply because they are women;
- students should not mock people for wearing clothing associated with another sex;
- men and women should take the side that is right rather than automatically defending their own sex;
- future dreams should not be restricted by gender stereotypes;
- students should respect both men’s and women’s interests;
- gender differences should be distinguished from discrimination;
- and disagreement should not become personal hatred.
The list sounds reasonable in isolation.
Somi begins crying before she can finish.
Images 029–036 — The lesson entered the students’ homes¶
Somi explains that her parents began arguing over the ideas she brought home from school.
Every discussion became a fight over who was right.
Her classmates copied the same pattern.
They stopped listening and began shouting labels at one another.
Somi says she wishes everyone could stop fighting.
Na tells Sanghui that values requiring mutual respect cannot be taught through a method that continually produces conflict.
The teacher believed she was giving children independent judgment.
Instead, she taught them which answer would earn praise.
Na calls the performance an example of how public education should not work.
Images 037–043 — The hidden senior group rejects Sanghui¶
Sanghui uploads the student’s gender-equality presentation to the online community.
The chatroom is labeled approximately:
SEOUL SENIORS
One member congratulates her at first.
Another then announces that the group has decided to expel Sanghui “for solidarity.”
They say she has failed to continue supporting the cause correctly.
A dismissive message suggests that senior members cannot remain associated with a teacher who has been publicly challenged by the Ministry.
One after another, users leave the chatroom.
Sanghui stares at the empty screen.
The people whose approval shaped her teaching abandon her the moment she becomes inconvenient.
Images 044–047 — The resignation letter and the SD card¶
The following day, a resignation letter is found on Sanghui’s desk.
Hanrim tells Na that Sanghui resigned immediately after the confrontation.
She angrily says Sanghui should not be allowed to disappear without revealing who operated the online group.
Na searches the papers and finds a small SD card.
He calls Hanrim’s reaction prejudice: she has already decided Sanghui will refuse to cooperate.
The card appears to contain the teacher’s records of the community.
It becomes the first real lead toward identifying the adults who coordinated the curriculum and student ostracism.
Chapter-level continuity notes¶
The chapter separates gender equality from coercive instruction¶
Na does not argue against equality. He argues that one correct social value cannot justify suppressing disagreement or sorting children into moral camps.
Sanghui is both responsible and manipulated¶
She chose to implement the lessons and pressure students, but the online community rewarded and directed that escalation.
Somi reveals the actual educational outcome¶
The stated goal was mutual respect. The lived result was conflict in classrooms and homes.
The SD card turns an ideological dispute into an organized investigation¶
The agency now has evidence that the teacher was part of a wider network rather than acting entirely alone.
