The chapter contains severe child abuse, adult fighting, starvation, destruction of food, and an inspector covertly moving next door to an abusive household.
Images 001–008 — The father confronts the “passerby”¶
Minseo’s father says the boy is his son and orders Na to leave.
Na notices bruises across the child’s face.
He says a citizen has a duty to report crimes, especially child abuse.
The father asks whether Na is:
- police;
- child protection;
- or one of the school-related officials who keep interfering.
Na says he is simply someone who saw a child wandering alone and bought him food.
He asks Minseo directly whether the father has hit him.
The boy is terrified and initially tries to protect the adult.
Images 009–016 — Na provokes the father into revealing himself¶
The father says Na has no right to judge a parent.
Na answers that repeated injuries, hunger, and abandonment are not education.
The father insults him and orders him out.
Na moves closer and keeps talking until the father throws the first punch.
The former fighter or physically strong young father expects Na to retreat.
Na catches the arm and knocks him down with one strike.
The child watches from the doorway.
Na asks Minseo whether he has ever hit him.
Minseo says no.
Na warns the father never to come near him again while behaving this way.
Images 017–023 — “Education” is not selfish violence¶
The father continues attacking.
Na allows him to experience how powerless he makes Minseo feel.
He says a person in his mid-twenties should understand the difference between parenting and using a child as an emotional punching bag.
The father suddenly collapses and appears to fall asleep from the blow.
Na checks that he is still breathing.
Minseo quietly enters.
Na jokes that the father was overly tired.
The apartment is filthy:
- unwashed dishes;
- empty bottles;
- trash;
- and little suitable food.
Na asks where Minseo’s mother is.
The child says she works and returns very late.
Images 024–032 — Why the ordinary process keeps failing¶
The preschool teacher arrives after worrying that Na followed the father alone.
She is surprised that he defeated a grown man so quickly.
Na explains that the situation still is not solved.
Police may arrest the father temporarily, but the mother and child may remain in the same household.
Domestic violence often continues because the victim family lacks money, housing, or confidence to leave.
A short arrest cannot guarantee safety the morning after release.
Na looks across the apartment complex and notices an empty neighboring unit.
He begins forming another plan.
Images 033–036 — Food and a warning note¶
When the father wakes, Minseo has a tonkatsu meal.
A teasing note says approximately:
WHO KNEW YOU’D GET KNOCKED OUT IN ONE HIT? EAT UP AND BUILD UP YOUR STRENGTH.
The father becomes furious.
He assumes Na entered again while he was unconscious.
He knocks the food away.
Minseo begins crying.
The father screams that the child is always making a mess.
Loud music or rhythmic noise suddenly begins through the wall.
Images 037–042 — Na has moved next door¶
The father pounds on the neighboring apartment and orders the occupant to turn the sound off.
The door opens.
Na stands inside, shirtless and entirely comfortable.
MORNING, SLEEPYHEAD.
DID YOU ENJOY THE TONKATSU?
The father realizes Na has not left the case.
The inspector has taken the empty unit next door, giving him direct access to every shout, impact, and crying child inside the apartment.
The chapter ends with Na smiling while the father begins to understand the new arrangement.
