Opening — Lim’s interrogation method¶
Lim abandons her frightened-teacher performance and restrains the village official.
He expects questions before violence.
Lim says battlefield interrogation works differently: pain comes first.
She breaks or dislocates one finger and warns that another finger will follow every time he gives an improper answer.
She asks where Son Hye-seung is.
The man insists that he does not know. He says he was trying to catch Kyu-jeong three days earlier and that the teacher had already left work.
Lim concludes that the missing teacher may be in even greater danger than expected.
The village’s strongest man¶
A huge local man nicknamed Whale appears.
Lim initially tries talking.
Whale attacks with extraordinary strength.
She notices that he is far stronger than the ordinary villagers and compares his power to elite fighters she knows, including Na and Do-hyun.
Despite the danger, she compliments him mid-fight.
Whale refuses to strike a woman because his father taught him not to.
He therefore attempts to restrain her without direct punches.
Lim does not share his limitation and uses the opening to continue attacking.
Na provokes the entire village¶
Na deliberately travels around the island creating visible disturbances.
He blocks roads, confronts elderly residents, stops people from dumping waste on property, and exposes men pretending to be police.
The scenes look like random gangster behavior to villagers, but each incident tests how the community enforces informal authority.
Na discovers very few police facilities and almost no younger independent residents.
When uniformed or pseudo-uniformed men finally appear, he exposes their lack of legitimate authority.
The village prepares collective violence¶
The village head’s men call for reinforcements.
They describe Na as a gangster ruining the island.
The coming typhoon prevents outside military police or support from arriving.
The village head decides that the island can handle the problem internally.
He notes that in severe weather it would not be strange if one or two people “went wrong.”
The phrasing turns the storm into planned cover for murder.
Lim and Na compare findings¶
Lim reports that aggressive questioning produced no reliable location for Son Hye-seung.
Na also asked teachers, residents, and the port. No one admits knowing where she went, and no record shows her leaving the island.
They close the curtains and light candles rather than using normal lights.
Lim asks why.
Na says visitors will arrive soon.
Outside, dozens of villagers approach the dark house carrying weapons.
Lim asks whether Na is confident against so many opponents.
Na answers that they are untrained civilians without guns, moving through mountains in the middle of a typhoon.
“EVEN 100 PEOPLE WON’T BE A PROBLEM.”
The chapter ends with the island’s collective enforcement force surrounding the investigators.

Every public confrontation reveals another layer of the village’s informal law and compromised enforcement.

The villagers rely on collective intimidation. Na and Lim rely on preparation, terrain, and specialized combat experience.
