Opening — The villagers enter the dark house¶
A local man uses a key given by the village head to enter Na and Lim’s temporary residence.
He says the two outsiders turned the island upside down and deserve punishment even without a direct order.
The group expects to find them sleeping.
Instead, Na and Lim are waiting.
Na remarks that many people came and says it would have been better if they had stayed home.
The investigators escape into the storm and invite the mob to follow.
A pursuit through the mountains¶
The villagers chase them into a dark mountain area under heavy rain.
They shout that they will tie the outsiders to trees and beat them.
Na and Lim disappear into the terrain.
One by one, pursuers are pulled away, struck, or left unconscious.
The villagers cannot see or hear clearly through the typhoon.
Na observes that civilians chasing special-forces veterans in those conditions is essentially suicide.
The numbers collapse¶
The village head waits for news.
More than thirty men began the pursuit.
Only four remain active.
They panic and say the mountain feels haunted because people vanish one at a time.
One asks to retreat.
Another admits they chose the wrong opponents.
Na captures the remaining men and repeats the village head’s earlier language:
In weather like this, it would not be strange if something went wrong.
He tells them there is only one way to stop the lesson: answer his questions honestly.
Whale enters the fight¶
Whale arrives and demands to know why a supposed gangster is looking for Son Hye-seung.
Na isolates one villager as the speaker and orders everyone else silent.
Whale attacks with enough force to fracture Na’s wrist or arm.
Lim asks whether Na is all right.
He acknowledges that Whale is extremely strong and says he may not be able to use that hand for a while.
Whale repeats that he cannot hit a woman but can strike a male gangster.
Na recognizes that this creates a convenient handicap.
He tells Lim she can handle the remaining villagers while he speaks to Whale.
The chapter closes with the confrontation shifting from mass pursuit to the question of why Whale is protecting the missing teacher.

1. The village mob loses power outside its usual social setting¶
Numbers and social authority become useless when the terrain, visibility, and initiative belong to Na and Lim.
2. Na mirrors the village’s threats¶
Repeating “something could go wrong” forces the attackers to hear how their own euphemistic murder language sounds from the other side.
3. Whale’s restraint reveals moral structure¶
He participates in violence but maintains a rule against striking women, suggesting he is not motivated in the same way as the elders.
4. Son Hye-seung is his central concern¶
His reaction to her name indicates that he knows more than the other pursuers and may be protecting rather than hunting her.
