Opening — Why Whale protects Son Hye-seung¶
The chapter begins from Whale’s perspective.
Because he is large, slow-speaking, and socially awkward, people of every age have always treated him as someone who can be mocked, ordered around, or struck.
They look at him like a sandbag rather than a person.
Son Hye-seung is different.
She is the only person who looks at him warmly, “like the morning sun.”
Whale made a private decision:
“WHATEVER HAPPENS TO MISS SON…”
“I WILL PROTECT HER NO MATTER WHAT.”
This immediately reframes his violence against Na. He believes the outsider is a gangster threatening the only adult who treated him with dignity.
The village head panics¶
Koo Man-chun realizes his men failed to catch two outsiders despite overwhelming numbers.
He calls them idiots and worries that Na will come for him next.
He considers hiding.
Outside, Na continues evading Whale’s attacks. Whale demands that a gangster fight confidently instead of dodging.
Na knows that one clean hit may end the fight. He keeps retreating and controlling distance while Lim finishes disabling the remaining villagers.
Lim asks whether he needs help.
Na tells Whale to land one hit if he can.
Na reveals his true role¶
After neutralizing the immediate threat, Na apologizes for deceiving Whale.
He says he and Lim are not gangsters.
They came from the Ministry of Education to help Son Hye-seung.
Na repeats Whale’s own principle: he said he could not allow bad people to take the teacher.
The two men are therefore trying to protect the same person.
Na asks Whale to tell him where she is.
Meanwhile, the village head searches for the teacher¶
Koo Man-chun orders villagers to catch Whale and the outsiders.
He says Son Hye-seung must be at Whale’s house or another hiding place.
Men move through the storm calling for her.
They threaten that she cannot leave the island after seeing what happened.
Whale’s hidden shelter¶
A flashback reveals that Whale rescued Son Hye-seung and hid her in a fishermen’s building that ordinary residents rarely visit.
He brought food and clothing from her residence.
Embarrassed, he insists he did not look at her underwear while packing.
Son Hye-seung thanks him.
She believes the village head is monitoring boats and communications, so she plans to wait until the typhoon passes.
She asks Whale to call the Ministry of Education or directory assistance.
He says he cannot make the call immediately and apologizes.
The teacher nevertheless records everything in a diary, hoping that even if she cannot escape, the document may reach the Teachers’ Rights Protection Agency.
Whale gives Na the location¶
Whale finally tells Na:
“MISS SON IS OVER THERE AT THE FISHING HOUSE.”
Only fishermen normally enter that building, making it a plausible hiding place.
He offers to guide them.
Koo Man-chun reaches her first¶
At the shelter, Son Hye-seung hears someone return and assumes it is Whale.
Instead, Koo Man-chun enters.
He asks why she disappeared and whether she called the “fucking thug.”
He says villagers were worried and claims he merely wants to discuss everything she wrote.
His sudden violence exposes the lie.
The chapter ends with Koo Man-chun attacking or seizing the teacher while Na, Lim, and Whale race toward the shelter.

1. Whale’s loyalty is rooted in recognition¶
Son Hye-seung’s basic kindness becomes life-changing because the village has spent years treating him as a tool.
2. Na wins the fight by changing the premise¶
He does not need to defeat Whale completely once he proves they share the goal of protecting the teacher.
3. The diary is Son Hye-seung’s insurance¶
She understands that the village previously silenced investigations and therefore creates a written record that can survive her.

His priority is not merely controlling the teacher physically. He needs to destroy or discredit the evidence she recorded.
