Opening — What should Sun-cheol live for?¶
After learning that his father died fourteen years earlier, Kim Sun-cheol asks Son Hye-seung:
“WHAT SHOULD I DO NOW?”
“WHAT SHOULD I LIVE FOR?”
For fifteen years, every painful task had meaning because he believed it supported his father.
That purpose has vanished.
Son Hye-seung cannot give him a simple answer.
Two days later¶
The typhoon subsides.
Police transport Koo Man-chun and close associates to the mainland.
Investigators find:
- large amounts of illegally collected development money,
- evidence of unpaid or stolen wages,
- lists of lobbying contacts involving public offices, courts, and journalists,
- and records connected to the scandal suppressed five years earlier.
Journalists flood the island.
The older case is reopened, and the village’s reputation collapses.
Sun-cheol is also charged¶
Sun-cheol is detained for seriously assaulting Koo Man-chun.
The village head suffered fractures to his face and nose.
A sympathetic police officer explains that some charge is unavoidable because of the severity of the injuries.
Public opinion and the context of rescuing Son Hye-seung may reduce the outcome.
The officer says he hopes the beating finally taught the village head something.
The village has not changed yet¶
News and online posts show residents continuing to blame outsiders.
Some destroy or attack Son Hye-seung’s residence and complain that female teachers should not be sent to the island.
Na says arresting a few leaders is not enough.
If the people do not change, the place will reproduce the same system.
Sun-cheol chooses to return¶
Officials and supporters offer Sun-cheol vocational training and donations.
Na says many people want to help him establish a life elsewhere.
Sun-cheol surprises them by saying he wants to return to the island.
He has lived there his entire adult life and does not know where else to go.
More importantly, he believes the village can change only if a resident remains to protect future outsiders.
He says that when teachers or public workers arrive, he will help them.
Perhaps then the village will become slightly better.
Son Hye-seung warns that changing people is difficult.
She nevertheless believes he can do well.
Na jokingly says his recovering arm guarantees Sun-cheol’s strength.
Na’s injury becomes office entertainment¶
Back at the agency, Lim loudly announces that Na wore a cast.
Chey Kang-suk rushes in, delighted to laugh at him.
Na says the arm was not fully broken—only slightly cracked—and has already healed.
The joke closes the island arc on a lighter note.
The next case¶
Na asks Lim to sort four or five reports.
She selects one that stands out: an elementary-school teacher accused by parents of being rude, abusive, and mentally unstable.
The file names Hyunjung Elementary School, fifth grade, class two, and teacher Choi Ji-sun.
Na and Lim observe her class.
She uses comics and humor to teach, the children concentrate, and she smiles warmly.
Nothing resembles the complaint.
After school, the inspectors introduce themselves.
The moment Choi Ji-sun hears the Teachers’ Rights Protection Agency has come because of a report against her, she collapses from a panic episode.
The chapter ends with students calling for her to wake up.

The island scandal becomes national news, but many residents respond by attacking the teacher rather than examining themselves.
2. Sun-cheol chooses a new purpose¶
He replaces service to a fictional hospitalized father with protection of real outsiders who may enter the village.

Vocational support exists, but he chooses the difficult environment he understands and accepts responsibility for changing it.
4. The new arc reverses expectations¶
The reported “psychopath teacher” appears calm and effective in class, then panics when authorities arrive.
