Opening — False complaints are different¶

They are considering a criminal case not only for Choi’s personal revenge, but to change an atmosphere in which parents can indiscriminately attack teaching rights without consequences.
Choi admits that she feels anger and wants the mother punished.
Then she asks about Woo-jin.
He is twelve, approaching puberty, and not a bad child despite one fight with a classmate.
A criminal case against his mother may injure him and destabilize his home.
Choi asks the agency to let the matter go for his sake.
A transactional apology¶
Woo-jin’s mother visits Choi.
She says she admits she went too far because of her child and apologizes.
The apology immediately becomes a bargain.
She asks Choi to admit one thing in return: that she sided with Sung-min during the school-violence committee and acted against Woo-jin.
If Choi acknowledges that accusation, the mother will admit that she became angry and made excessive complaints.
Choi refuses.
She submitted the committee opinion to the Ministry, and the records prove that the claim is false.
The final offer¶
The agency offers Woo-jin’s mother a path away from criminal charges.
She must publicly admit that she lied and apologize to the school.
The mother refuses.
Public admission would tell the entire neighborhood she was wrong.
She says she would rather see how far Choi’s “hypocrisy” goes.
Lim’s final day in class¶
Lim completes her temporary teaching assignment.
Most students applaud and thank her. They say she was clumsy but improved and made the class fun.
Woo-jin suddenly insults her.
He says she cannot teach, does not know mathematics, and should remain home.
Mrs. Choi orders him to apologize.
Woo-jin refuses and asks what anyone can do when he is only telling the truth.
The chapter ends with the child beginning the provocation his mother designed.
