Opening — The parent meeting¶
Parents gather in fifth grade, class two.
Before the formal discussion, the children present their work.
One student shares a webtoon plan about a hero who revives every three days and fights zombies. Choi praises the idea and jokes that the student should not pretend not to know her after becoming a famous artist.
The classroom atmosphere is warm and ordinary.
Woo-jin’s mother is still absent as the meeting approaches its scheduled end.
Lim says the woman is most afraid of being publicly found guilty, but once the neighborhood already knows, there may be no reason for her to appear.
Choi concludes the regular class.
A special class on apology and forgiveness¶
At the last moment, Woo-jin’s mother arrives.
She asks for a temporary special lesson.
“THE SUBJECT IS APOLOGY AND FORGIVENESS.”
She identifies herself as Lee Woo-jin’s mother.
In front of the teacher, children, and parents, she admits that she made false complaints and used Woo-jin.
She says Mrs. Choi lost weight and suffered because of her actions.
She bows and sincerely asks everyone for forgiveness.
For a moment, the public confession appears to fulfill the agency’s condition.
The parents attack¶
The room erupts.
Parents call her inhuman for using her own child.
They demand that Woo-jin transfer, that his mother leave the neighborhood, and that she be sent to prison.
One says her child cannot attend the same school as the son of such a woman.
The apology has not restored her status. It has formally confirmed every accusation.
Her performance collapses¶
Woo-jin’s mother realizes that enduring the humiliation for a few minutes will not automatically restore her social position.
She decides that if she loses here, she will suffer for the rest of her life.
Rather than accept the consequences, she attacks the other mothers.
She says many of them also called Choi at night, complained, and gossiped in private group messages.
She threatens to reveal their chats.
The parents turn on one another and begin fighting.
The woman’s apology is exposed as another attempt to control the outcome rather than genuine acceptance of wrongdoing.
Mrs. Choi asks for restraint¶
Choi stops the confrontation.
She says Woo-jin’s mother at least gathered the courage to apologize publicly and asks the others to listen.
A parent points out that Choi is the person most harmed and asks why she is protecting the aggressor.
Choi directs everyone’s attention toward Woo-jin.
The boy is embarrassed, angry, and exhausted by the adult spectacle.
Woo-jin asks the agency for help¶
Woo-jin tells the Teachers’ Rights Protection Agency that his mother has behaved this way for a long time.
He says people like her cannot be fixed through ordinary arguments.
He begs:
“PLEASE CATCH MY MOM.”
“PLEASE MAKE MY MOM HUMAN.”
The chapter ends with the child asking for protection from the parent who repeatedly claimed to act on his behalf.
Chapter-level observations¶
1. Public apology is not automatic reconciliation¶
The people harmed are not required to forgive simply because the perpetrator completes a prescribed performance.
2. The apology fails when status does not return¶
The mother can tolerate bowing only if it ends the consequences. When it does not, she resumes attacking others.
3. Other parents are not entirely innocent¶
Her accusations about their late calls and gossip may be self-serving, but the earlier chapters show that several did participate.
4. Woo-jin becomes the clearest victim¶
The adults debate punishment and reputation while he asks for a mother capable of recognizing him as a person.
