Opening — No one names the distributor¶
Na and Lim question students caught gambling.
They warn that another offense may result in juvenile detention.
Most say they learned about the games from friends and cannot identify the original distributor.
Na says there is no realistic way to map the entire network in one day and prepares to continue the following morning.
Then Lim notices a different crime nearby.
Boys break into a car¶
Several youths teach one another how to identify an unlocked vehicle.
They say a folded or unfolded side mirror can indicate whether the doors were secured.
They learned the method from webtoons and news reports.
They find an open vehicle and steal an iPad.
One boy says selling the devices will cover the interest they owe.
Another says they should not repay anything and should target something bigger.
Na and Lim catch them.
Gambling debt¶
Lim checks their phones.
The boys insist that they can simply return the stolen goods.
Na asks about the “interest” they mentioned.
They admit that recruiters approached them near an internet café and demonstrated a gambling win.
They watched 50,000 won become approximately 1.6 million won and began thinking that studying, university, and employment were pointless compared with immediate profit.
Within days they lost their savings, sold a computer, and had nothing left.
The recruiters returned with loans.
Small amounts became hundreds, and the demanded repayment grew into several million won.
The collectors are too frightening to resist.
One boy says a collector is among the top three fighters at Guwon High Tech and is supposedly the best student there.
Na recognizes the connection.
Kwon-hyuk disappears¶
The agency checks Jang Kwon-hyuk’s workplace.
His supervisor says he suddenly called in sick for several days.
The timing matters: the previous day was payday.
Lim checks the school.
Lee Ho-sung and Jo Hong-gi are also absent.
Kwon-hyuk did not report to work, and the others did not attend school.
Na realizes that his friendly greeting alerted the group.
“I MADE A HUGE MISTAKE.”
Kwon-hyuk noticed the investigation and hid.
A guardian waits at home¶
Kwon-hyuk’s guardian or mother says he did not return home.
She believed he had finally begun living properly.
He attended field training, prepared for employment, and was so proud of his first paycheck that he gave it to her.
She asks how long he will continue disappearing into trouble whenever his life starts improving.
The scene emphasizes that the gambling network is destroying progress made during the earlier intervention.
Na’s new plan¶
Lim asks what it means if students they previously taught become perpetrators again.
She wonders about the purpose of their work.
Na does not answer with despair.
He assigns two tasks:
- He will locate Kwon-hyuk.
- Lim will determine when the car thieves’ interest payment is due and stay near them.
If they fail to pay, the collectors will come and reveal another level of the organization.
The bloody cliffhanger¶
The final sequence shows Na and Lim finding someone collapsed.
They recognize Jang Kwon-hyuk.
He is severely injured, with blood running over his face, arm, and hand.
They call his name repeatedly and ask what happened.
The chapter ends before revealing who attacked him, whether he was punished by the gambling organization, or what information he possesses.
Chapter-level observations¶
1. The debt grows after the visible win¶
The recruiters first show an extraordinary profit, creating the belief that money can be produced without work. Loans arrive only after the victim is committed.
2. Crime becomes debt service¶
The car theft is not separate delinquency. It is a direct attempt to satisfy gambling collectors.
3. Earlier reform is fragile¶
Employment and school improvement did not make Kwon-hyuk immune to a profitable criminal network.
4. The agency uses collection pressure as investigative leverage¶
Rather than searching every school blindly, Lim waits for the debt collectors to expose themselves.
